Monson 357 and cracked frames??
« on: August 26, 2009, 06:17:02 PM »
Hello guys, about 25 years ago my wife took my DW from me, and told me to find myself something else. She carries "her" 357 daily. Shoots it very well, and is just down right comfortable with it.
Now finally I found a 4 bbl pack, Monson mfg.that I could afford,( The seller says it is 30 years old, and has never been fired.) my ffl dealer says watch out, they have a problem with them cracking the frames even with 38spcl loads. I did not want to argue with him as he is about 83years old, and very knowledgable, but I have never heard of this anywhere.
Also I know several of the ammo manufacturers put DW in with the Ruger and FA only categories.
Does anybody know anything about this, personal experience?

Thanks in advance,
John

I shoot full .357 loads out of mine and have not had this problem. I'm far from being an expert though.

I put over 1000 rounds of a mix of 38's and 357's through my model 15 in one day many years ago, and it still shoots fine after several years of abuse, no cracks.  The gun is an early Monson model.

Thanks guys, your replys are what I have always heard of as far as the quality of DW, and also the same experience of my wifes as well. I also know they are the sweet hearts of the silhouette crowds as well.

For about 6 years, I averaged between 700 and 1000rds a years shooting silhouette with my .357 DW. And it's a Monson frame and barrel. Load was top in a Winchester manual, with 296 and a 210gr. bullet.  Still one of the most accurate revolvers I own. I would definetly look it over real good, but if it's never been shot, I wouldn't wait to long to get it.  gypsyman

OOOhweee,
I just picked this pistol pack up at my dealers today, shot 1/2 a box of WW 145gn, silvertip hp's through it. Shot like a dream.
Man am I one happy camper today. Guess I just needed a little reassurance from some other DW shooters.
 Thanks again guys,
 John

I have no clue what a Monson .357 is but I've owned exactly two DW revolvers both .357. Of them one had a cracked frame. I don't expect there will ever be a third at my house.

Monson,Mass. was the first place that Dan Wessons were made. Dan Wesson was still alive and making them. After he died, it got kinda mixed up, and pretty soon his grandson was making them, in Palmer,Mass.
Then the company went thru some more turmoil, and finally a man by the name of Bob Serva bought the company. Moved operations to Norwich,NY. Which is where CZ bought the company, basically for the .45 auto they had been producing. Once in a great while, you'll here of somebody getting a revolver out of the company, but very seldom.  gypsyman

The cracked frame I had was a long time ago most likely back in the early to mid 80s as I recall. I bought it from a fellow at the shooting range. He had been shooting it and offered it to me. I accepted his offer without doing a thorough check as I'd seen him firing it and just "assumed" it OK.

I can't recall the dates we shot at that range which was long ago closed down. It was then about 2.5 miles from where I live now. I know it closed in the 80s but I can't recall the date.

I have owned several DW's, currently have a model 15-2 pac and a Model 40-V8S (.357 super mag).  This is the first I have heard of cracked frames.  Never heard about it at the DW forum.  There isn't a revolver made that can't be destroyed.  Smith, Colt, Ruger, I've seen all them broken at one time or another.

I never heard of any cracked frames from any production location.  Still, there is no gun that can't be destroyed by abuse and/or hot loads!!
Three44s - I can almost beat your deal.  6" barrelled M-40 with 280 pcs of brass for $300.  About 4 years ago - guy walking around at a gunshow.  The vendor he was trying to trade in with - passed -- I scooped.

Have several, they all happen to be Monsons. My 2nd .357 has the purple finish but only on the side plate. Never heard of cracked frames either but don't doubt it for a second.

Best deal I ever got on a gun: A 741 Vent Heavy 10" with matching stainless Burris mount & rings, 2x6 Bushnell (silver), two grips, and both boxes. $400 cash out the door

I'm on my sixth Model 15-2, I sold the previous ones because I needed money, and I shot thousands of full loads through one of them, probably close to 5000, and the only thing was a tiny little top strap flame cut that I used stainless steel foil to prevent after a certain point, and the forcing cone on the original barrel became very smooth. The gun was amazingly accurate, and at that time, I could shoot pretty well. I never saw a cracked DW frame, but I bulged a barrel once after I had a couple of rounds that sounded "off", and I didn't check it. I bought a new barrel for $25, and was back shooting in 10 minutes. I saw a bent crane once, I don't know how they did that. The frame was fine, and I sold the owner a crane from the box of parts told about below.

I have had two really great deals on .357 DW's, one was a box of used and new parts that I bought from a guy who had closed his shop. I paid $50 for it, and I put together an entire 4" VH gun while sitting in Burger King's parking lot, and I kept one of the other shroud and barrel sets, and sold the other 3 with carry wear on them for over $350 total. There were sets of all the small parts, sight blades, etc, and I sold most of those too, but kept two sets of almost everything that would possibly break, and I got another $300 for all that stuff. I sold the parts gun a couple years ago for over $300. It shot great, the frame had a few scratches on it, and I had to loctite the cylinder stop, big deal. About $1000 for a $50 investment is hard to beat!

My other great deal was on a 715, 6" VH. Hardly fired, one scratch on the barrel shroud, and just about perfect otherwise, two factory grips, and one custom grip, a holster, a soft rug case, the box, manual, wrench, and an extra barrel nut. All for $269! I couldn't believe nobody bid on it for days but me! I kept wondering,"What am I missing on this? Why isn't it being bid on?", but I wasn't missing anything. I was at work when the auction ended, and the last 15 minutes were really stressful, as I expected a flurry at the end, but there was a single bid for $264 and I had already maxed my bid at $350, so I outbid him instantly. When it came to my FFL, he said, "How much did you say you paid for this thing?", and when I told him, $289, with shipping, he shook his head, and said, "Wow, that's crazy, it looks like it was shot once and put away!". I took it home and stripped it down and the transfer bar just had the very beginnings of a shiny spot on it, so it hadn't been even dry fired much at all. I put a hundred .38's and .357's through it, and it shot great! The transfer bar's shiny spot doubled in size by the time I put the second half dozen rounds through it, so it hadn't been shot much at all.

I did well on my 44 too, I got it for $405, and again, I kept thinking, "What am I missing?", since nobody bid on it but me and one other guy, and he stopped a day before it was over. It, like my 715 was barely fired, and the only "flaw" was the plum frame. Big deal, I actually kind of like it. I had to buy a wrench for it, but it came in an aftermarket aluminum case, and there was a bolt, and an extra SS barrel nut under the foam. The barrel nut on the gun hadn't been taken off before, and I had to soak it with break free for an hour and it finally let go. The insides were loaded with that wierd white "lube" that turns to something like chalk when it ages, but other than that, it was just about perfect.

I have to add my great deal; a Model 40 with 8" barrel for $160 from a pawn shop.  He was asking $225 and right beside it was a model 15 for $350.  I asked why and he said that they don't make the bullets for it any more; 357Max.  I asked if he'd take $160(all I had at the time), he replied"only if you don't bring it back."  And that's how I ended up with my Supermag.  That was in 1992 and it's still shooting fine.

In all these years I never heard of a DW with cracked frame. Mine below are from bottom 1985, 1986 and 1989, they are bottom to top 744, 715, 722 and I would grab before I would any new S&W I own if it hit the fan.

man you guys got some nice deals! my 357 snub is great... altho now i feel like i paid way too much for it at $325!! :o ;D

not really, i had been wanting one for a while and this one fit the bill.

my first one was a beater i picked up. traded the guy straight up for a Taurus model 85 ultra light 38. this was a model 44 with heavy 6" barrel. finish was horrible. shoulda got that one reblued, but i got it teflon coated and never really liked it... it is no longer with me... :(

i want one of all of em! i love my Dan Wessons!!

waldo, you got some purty guns!

i try not to even look at one to buy unless it is a monson made gun. i guess it is because that was my first...

altho i did see a palmer one the other day on auction arms that was very nice! had a unique port job on it. it was tempting...

Thanks Joe. I still wonder sometimes what I doing with one still new in the box, maybe this fall I take it out and see if it goes bang when the trigger is pulled.

Sure thing man. Your phone # still BR-547?

Joe if I decide to sell it in the future I'll give you first chance to get the gun. I did buy a new 4" barrel & shroud about year or so ago, but I have never installed it.

It's also a Monson gun by the way.
