rebarreling a 700
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:42:04 AM »
Who would you suggest to rebarrel (or rebore) a remington 700 in .17 Rem to .204 Ruger? It is getting harder to work with those tiny .17 caliber bullets. Also, the .204 SEEMS to hold up better in the wind on long shots. My buddy has a T/C in .204 that we share and I reload for.

GBO Sponsor Wayne York of Oregon Gunsmithing specializes in reboring of rifles but I'm pretty sure does rebarrelling as well. Our oldest continuous sponsor SSK Industries are experts at rebarrelling. Match Grade Machine also a GBO Sponsor does rebarrelling as well.

I maybe overlooking a GBO Sponsor who rebarrels but I think that's all. I can recommend any of the three for the job you want done.

I think I'd rebarrel instead of reboring. Reboring just seems too chancey to me.

I think reboring is fine and heck of alot cheeper than a rebarrel.

I'd probably just sell the .17 and get a .223 or .22-250.  Both are easy to work with.

I wouldn't take that gun apart, they don,t make them any more! It won't take long to sell it and then get a .204.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I have a couple of 700s at the smiths being taken apart now.
SS 204 sporter contour
Blued 22-250 varmint

Your smith can screw yours off and reinstall another, headspace and your good to fire.  Under 1 hour of work, should not cost $50.  Stamping on bbl likely won't line up like from factory.

Both were low round guns and bores looked good, but I'll clean them and know for sure.

Either of my bbls would be under $100.

Let me know.
