Powders for Mortars
« on: June 30, 2010, 03:32:08 AM »
Are any of these powders good for mortars, 1FG.2fG,4Fg or 5FG,
    Wano Powder- 2FA-3FA- 4 FA
     Meal 55
    Reenactor
    Mill 7
   Meal D-7 FA
    116 fuse powder.
What will work and what to stay away from. And what are some of these powders,
    Thanks

What size is you powder chamber?

Over one inch stick with Cannon grade. You can use Fg but reduce your charge substantially and work up. Switlik's pressure gun work discovered that in equal weight service charges Fg gave a 40% increase in pressure over Cannon grade with no increase velocity.

Fa can be used for the larger cannons but refer to the load guidlines posted by the N-SSA and AAA to determine how much.

Under one Inch, use what F grade that  is recommend by the Manufacturers for rifles and pistols of similar caliber. Reduce the charges substantially from those recommended.  If you use recommend loads for pistol and rifle you will have excessive recoil and can damage you gun.

FFFFg is priming powder, don't use as main charge.

Reenactor, I believe has been used as blank charges for reenacting.  We had some one here a while back posting about using it in a cannon.

I don't know about the others.  Not much information available on them in sporting use, and you are probably better off staying away from the others.

Check the load recommendations at  N-SSA and AAA for the 2 inch chamber.  The base maximum rule is 2 oz. Cannon grade per inch of bore for 2 inch and larger bores.  There is some slight variation between groups.

Dom may give you a suggested load for the cannon he is building for you.
