Temptation Sucks!
« on: November 10, 2003, 06:21:36 AM »
I was sitting in the woods this weekend with my
.17 HMR hoping to eliminate some of the "Critters"
that keep raiding my garbage cans. When out walks a
nice fat Georgia Whitetail buck. Not a trophy by any means,
but not bad. So here I am at about 30 yard with my
crosshairs right in the middle of his right eye!
Would it kill him I thought?  No Doubt!
LEGAL I THOUGHT?   NOPE!
DO IT ANYWAY I THOUGHT? BETTER NOT!
Angel on one shoulder, Devil on the other kind of thing going on!
So I stomped my foot to run it off.
It only ran about 30 yards!
I went through all of the should I's all over again before it
finally walked back into the woods.
Man that was almost too much temptation for an old fat
Georgia boy to resist!!!
I'll bet I would have been the first person to kill a whitetail with a .17 HMR
though!!!

Well I don't know if you'd be the first or not but I know the temptation your talking about.
I've shot nothing larger than a groundhog at 100yds and several of them, one out to 140, but I have to admit, this lil round does plenty of damage. A head shot under 50 would certainly bring down a deer.
Would I do it..................Nope! Do I have to bite my tongue not to.....Yep!

You aren't the only one who has had to say no to temptation.

I was squirrel hunting with my .22 mag.

As I was working through some thick stuff comeing to an old logging road I heard a couple of deer trotting my way. They hit the brakes about 15' from me and started the old head bobbing and stomping routine.
I slowly unslung my rifle and "picked shots" for what seemed like ten minutes before they turned and trotted off through the woods.

The young buck had a perfect 10 point rack. The interesting thing was that the bases were no bigger that my little finger and you could have covered the whole rack with a soccer ball. We lost the hunting lease the following year so I have no Idea what he grew into.

I know of someone (not me, uh-uh, nope) that took a doe at 60yds from off his front porch during deer season.  One shot in the head.  The doe went 3ft.....straight down.
