cross draw holsters ?
« on: November 07, 2003, 01:51:18 PM »
What exactly is a cross draw holster and how useful is it for a red dotted handgun or a short barreled back-up HG with open sights? Thanks for any help guys.

Cross draws ride on your off side. (left side for the right handed person) They are tilting toward your right side. You have to reach across you're belly to draw it from the holster.

I've made a couple, one I use for open sights and the other for scopes or red dots. The scoped holster has a slot big enough for the base to slide into.

Cross draws are very comfortable when rideing in a vechile, 4 wheeler, horse, etc.

Where did you guys get yours from? Are there any "economy" versions made by Uncle Mikes or Mil-Tech? Thanks for the replies fellas.

Mine is for my Mag-Na-Port custom Ruger Blackhawk and was made by Mernickle Custom holsters.

I have heard good things about the Freedom Arms holsters if you have a single action.

I also wear my handguns cross draw. But, I've never (that I can remember!) bought a "cross draw" holster! I'm right handed. I just get a regular right-handed holster (most are Uncle Mikes), an thread it on, on the left side, after passing it through the first belt loop. It is more comfortable for me, and it keeps the handgun from banging against a rifle slung on the right side (if I'm carrying one). It also is out of the way, when sitting, and has arguably easier access. Now some of those stiffer, forward-tilt duty type rigs may not work as well, in this scenario. But, Try it, You MIGHT like it :) >>>>>>>>>>>Bug.

Bug, I do almost the same thing. I carry my 4 5/8 Blackhawk in an Uncle Mikes R/H holster but I also wear it crossdraw style. the only thing I do different is I wear it on an Uncle Mikes belt over my regular belt. This allows me to slide it way over on my left side when I want it out of the way like when I am attaching a tree stand, and then I pull it closer to my center while sitting in a stand. It makes for an easy reach with little movement.

I get pretty much the same result, by skipping the second belt loop. I wear an 1 1/2" belt, though. It might not work as well with some of the lighter/smaller belts.
