Handgun for Spring Turkey?
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:49:58 AM »
Hey Gang,
I already posted this on the Turkey Hunting forum but it seemed appropriate here too.
I got this guy with a pet load from my iron-sighted, 454, 7.5" RSR.
Stopped him at 31 steps. Good thing too 'cause he meant business!
I started calling right about 11-AM and had him down a couple minutes before the noon closing bell.
Didn't weigh him but he seemed like 50 lbs by the time I got back to the truck.
He was sporting a 9" beard and 1 1/8" spurs. Crop was full of clover. Hmmm
I guess God was tired of his nonsense and wanted me to handle it.

Good job and nice bird!  Sounds like a lot of fun taking one that way.

Thanks guys,
I'll confess to being extra-pleased at using a revolver.
I used a flintlock for years but this is even better because of the freedom of movement offered.
Still have to make a very careful shot though. Always give credit where its due...
Thank You Jesus!

That is a cool accomplishment, and a nice bird!

I'd hunt turkey's if we were able to use a handgun here.

Congradulations, been wondering how long before someone took up this adventure. And a great trophy to boot.

For AL Forum Members- Like a fairytale, once upon a time I remeber AL Turkey Handgun regulations to be the  same as deer, any .22 centerfire expanding caliber, plus the shot gun regs. I noted this year that Handgun Turket required .40 cal plus centerfire.  When did this change, and why?  Please enlighten me. I have a.30 Carbine handgun, plus some centerfire .22s that used to be legal.

Congrats on a nice bird. I am sure it is a great feeling to take a turkey with a handgun. I tried last year with my Contender 22mag, just never got the chance to drop the hammer.

Very nice!
Wouldn't the .327 Magnum be just about perfect for turkeys? Or, a revolver in .270 REN? You might have given me a reason to consider a new Blackhawk.

Hey Bob - I think the 327 would be a good round for Turkey, with a solid Keith style swc but I don't know if anyone makes a mould or bullet for that style slug in 30-32 bore.  Actually, I would love to see a slug like that for the 7.65 Luger and the 7.62 Tokarev as well.

Mikey, check on RCBS .32-98 444.  Problem solved.

For myself, I've had the most consistant luck on turkey with cast bullets in .44 Specials, .44 WCFs and .45 ACPs.  A 115gr HP out of a P7 9mm worked fine for two short range birds but I prefer more diameter and weight.
