Primer/bullet sealant improvisation.
« on: November 29, 2003, 07:15:38 AM »
I am wondering about makeshift primer sealants.  Does anyon here have thoughts, good or bad, about clear nail polish?  I see primer sealants available, but figure that I could save some shipping costs for something that looks just like.....well just like nail polish.  I want to start sealing the handloads I use for hunting.  Ive never had a problem with moisture invading my reloads and causing problems, but have never really been in a situation where extreme weather could cause said problems (Ive only been hunting for 2 years now and this season was over on the second day.)  So what does everyone think?
Thanks,

nothing wrong with nail polish, cheaper than most anything else. use sparingly, a little goes a long way, and I only use it if I think I might get wet, (read hunting), Raymond

WHY? You going scuba diving with your ammo? Do you store it under water?

If not then don't worry about it. Just load it and use it. I've NEVER ever used a sealant of any kind on any ammo I've ever loaded. Never had a problem with it yet. I've shot some left around for many years and it is just as good when fired as when loaded. A couple of times I've picked up a round under a tree I took a stand in that had been laying out in the weather for a year or more. Took it home and tried and each time it fired just fine and was right in the group with other ammo loaded at the same time. It just really ain't a problem.

I use orange nail,Polish on my primers, not really to seal them but more to id them as my rounds. It is nice to be able to Tell your rounds from some one Else's in a public target range.

Hello Brian, :D

I agree with GB here it is not a problem. But if you a clear or lightly tinted get Hard As Nails at Walgreens or Rite Aid for less than $2.00, that’s the same stuff that is sold as primer sealant for $9.00 plus. When I get a wild hair,   I use about 6 different colors and make sure one of them is bright pink and red. Just have fun but don’t use your girlfriend’s go and buy your own. LOL.

Thanks for the replies.  I just had seen so much of a deal made about comericial loadings being sealed (especially the premium handgun self defense rounds which it seems everyone seals,) that I figured it is possible for water intrusion.  But me personaly, I could not see how water could get around those primer and bullets when it takes a good deal of effort to get them in there, meaning there aint a very easy way to get in there.  Oh well.  If the day ever presents itself to me where I lose a deer because my rounds got wet, then I guess Ill start sealing them.  But for now I guess Ill skip it.
