How to best get a loud report from a LePans Coehorn mortar
« on: June 26, 2010, 04:59:49 AM »
Getting ready for the 4th,would like to get a more satisfactory salute (no projectile) bang from a LePans grenade mortar and a LePans 6 pound mortar.

Any recommendations?

Any owners of LePans mortars?

Welcome to a cannoneer’s paradise, Millsman. The answer to your question is easy; anything that relatively seals the bore and provides some resistance to the pressure of the ignited charge moving it out the barrel is going to make any piece of black powder artillery make a bigger bang, although a mortar isn’t going to be as loud as a cannon. Now for three things that aren’t so easy: You can’t use something as a wad that’s going to bind too much in the bore because this could lead to dangerous pressure levels, you have to be aware of the dangers of starting a fire if your wad material is going to burn, and you have to be aware of the dangers of injury or damage to property if your wad material will act like a heavy projectile in its own right (like wet newspaper). Other than some silly things used in my youth, the only wads I’ve used have been cork, dried compacted grass, and thick felt wads. Another member was recently talking about using an equal amount of flour on top of the charge. This sounds interesting, as it would seal the bore, provide some weight to offer resistance, and it wouldn’t pose a danger as a projectile; I think I’ll give it a shot the next time I go to the range.

I used to use damp grass clippings as a wad in my coehorn it worked well and there was no clean up needed afterward....

Millsman -

WELCOME to the board!  Do you have pix and could you give us some dimensions - bore diameter, wall thickness, powder chamber dimensions etc.?

Try a disc of cardboard one piece thick, cut to the diameter of the bore.

Personally, I use bread.  I take the bread and roll it into a ball and compact it on top of the powder.  I use no more that two slices for my largest mortar (shoots 6.5 oz juice cans, about 2.125 inches in diameter).

The bread never catches fire but it does make some nice toast for the birds and those pesky squirrels.

Millsman,

Are you talking about a mortar made by LaPan's Foundry in Hudson Falls, NY?

Millsman,

I hope you don't mind that I'm putting this back on the open forum, but I think (IIRC) that another member (KABAR) has some information on LaPan Foundry.
I know there have been a few other threads here about LaPan's cast cannons. I think Kabar said that a man was injured firing one, and even though it wasn't due to any fault of the manufacturer he sued them, so they stopped making reproduction cast bronze and iron artilley for a time. I don't know if they still cast artillery. http://lapansfoundry.com/about.html
