Barrel twist on a 223 Handi
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:52:55 PM »
I have a friend who bought his little girl a 223 handi a couple weeks ago.  She is a pretty small girl so he got her that to deer hunt with.  The deer around here aren't normally very heavy but their are exeptions.  He is going to handload for her , and is wanting to shoot a bullet around 60 grains.  He shot some that were 60 something grains and they grouped very poorly.  He's worried the twist might not be fast enough for heavy bullets.  So does anyone know?  If it is what do ya'll use in 223 handi's and is there any accuracy improving tricks in case it ends up just not being a good shooter?  Thanks for all the help guys.

Depending on the year built the twist can be different. Current barrels are 9 twist which should stabilize the 60 grain bullets. Go to the frequently asked question form and all your questions have already been answered about twist rates and accurizing.

Bsrnes has a 52 grain TSX bullet that will work in either 1-12 or 1-9.

The Sierra #1370 63gr Semi-Spitzer, Winchester 64gr PowerPoint and Nosler Partition 60gr all have a good track record on deer and in 1:12" twist 223 H&Rs.  Let me add that if the barrel is a 20" Superlight, it needs to be shot cool, or groups will not be satisfactory.  ;) Be sure to read the Handi Basics 101 sticky too, there are some simple things that you need to be aware of that will make or break accuracy in an H&R.
