Sportster in HM2 questions.
« on: April 22, 2010, 04:08:58 PM »
After looking around a little it sounds like the Sportster (Handi?) was made in .17 HM2 for awhile and I'd like to know a little more about them.

Can anybody tell me if they were made with just the heavy (bull/varmint) barrel, or if they were also made with the lighter, tapered, barrel?

Also, were they ever made with the synthetic stock?

Thanks!

They were only made with synthetic stock and 22" bull barrel, same as the 17hmr.

And if you can find one, buy it. They are VERY accurate and lots of fun to shoot....<><....:)

I put an add in the GBO classifieds but so far haven't been stampeded by folks wanting to push them on me :D

I haven't even seen many new Sportster HMR's and no .22 WMR in stock at the on-line dealers so called H&R the other day and asked about the .22 mag and HMR.

The H&R rep. I talked to said they were still shipping the HMR but suggested I have my local dealer contact their main distributor to see if they had any of the .22 WMR's left. I did that and my local guy said no...none left. I wasn't smart enough to ask the rep. at the time but I'm wondering if they've discontinued the Sportster in .22 WMR. Seems like all the Sportsters are pretty tough to come by right now but maybe it's always been that way?

I wonder if there's somebody out there making after-market barrels for the Sportster? I'd like to have one with a light weight (tapered) barrel in HM2 to use as a pack gun for hooter (blue grouse) hunting.

The fine little .17 Mach2's are sort of similar to 30-30's and .357's, those that are lucky enough to have one seldom sell them, and because they are no longer making the .17 Mach2's they are even harder to come by....<><....:)

MSP Ret - Thanks for the info...I may have to relax my standards a bit...I was looking for NIB or very light use  ::)

Slowhandd - That's a VERY nice looking rifle! Thanks for the eye candy :)

Tenacity usually pays off so I'll keep looking for a nice HM2 and someday I'll probably come up with one. Meantime, I may get a new standard .22 and have a .22 mag and/or .17 HMR barrel fitted, if H&R still does that. I'll wait a little longer to see if a HM2 turns up first though.

Spawner,
I have a Sportster in 17M2 & 17HMR. Both barrels are fitted with Mueller APV scopes. Out to 100 yards
there isn't much difference accuracy wise. Both will shoot just under 1 inch if the wind cooperates.
I'm not a fan of the synthetic furniture so I replaced mine with a new pallet wood set. I originally
bought it in 17HMR then I sent it off to H&R in Gardner Mass. to get one of the last 17M2 barrels
fitted before they were discontinued. The 17M2 is a dirty round. I run a Bore Snake through it
every 30-40 rounds, or when accuracy starts to drop off. Its a cool little round though. Mine
shoots Eley V-Max the best. Ammotogo.com has Eley for about $50+ shipping for 500 rounds.
I really like mine and it won't ever be for sale. I would Sportster 17M2's for sale there from time to
time.

Thanks Robert,

I'll keep looking for an HM2 and I'm sure SOMEDAY I'll come up with one. There was one on an auction site a few days ago but $300 sounded a little spendy even for one of those little jewels ;o) Sure wish H&R would do another run of HM2's! Would be great if they'd do both the sporter and bull barrels in HM2 and HMR!

Mean time, I''ve got a Sportster in .22 lr on order and will have some good entertainment with that for a bit when it gets here. It may have to wait a bit though, the spring Kings (spawners ;o)) are starting to come in and the skiff is ready to go....

Cheers!

It was one that was traded it. Looked like it was never fired.

Good on you Jlar! Sounds like just what I'd like to find.

Not many places other than on-line for me to look right now but this winter we'll probably snowbird and be running through some of the western states so I'll have a chance to look in a lot more places. We've only got one gunshop here that handles used firearms and they have two used Handi's but no used Sportsters right now.

Meantime...the .22 lr Sportster I ordered from WallMart a little over a week ago got here today and getting it shooting the way I want it to and doing mods will keep me entertained 'till we head South.

I'd give places (Gander Mt. or Scheels) that have used guns a call on the phone. They can do a search of all their stores for a used sportster. Save you alot of time driving around. Good luck.

Jlar,

Thanks for the suggestion...sounds like an effective way to do it. Though when we get the camper on the PU and head South the main deal is driving around and finding good camp spots, the gun shops are icing on the cake  :D

I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to say that I know a gunshop that has a Sportster in 17 hm2 new for $149.  If all works out it will follow me home tomorrow.

It followed me home along with a Marlin 783 .22mag.  And they are not for sale....yet.  What wood forends fit the barrel on the 17hm2?

The Ultra forends fit those 22" bull barrels.    That's what I have on my HMR.

For something smaller and a bit better proportioned the forstock from a youth shotgun is good.
