Dee why don't you read this. The NRA was involved before it went to court. The handful of you bashing the NRA has not changed the minds of the NRA membership. Still 4 Million strong. So keep bashing away, I know who's side your on.  :-X

National Rifle Association on Second Amendment Freedom in McDonald v. City of Chicago

Monday, June 28, 2010

Fairfax, Va. -- The National Rifle Association of America today praised the U.S. Supreme Court's historic decision in another landmark Second Amendment case. In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that the Second Amendment applies not just to Washington, D.C. and other federal enclaves, but protects the rights of all Americans throughout the country. The opinion in McDonald v. City of Chicago brings an end to the nearly 30 year-long handgun ban that the city has imposed on its law-abiding citizens.

“This is a landmark decision,” said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. “The Second Amendment -- as every citizen's constitutional right -- is now a real part of American constitutional law. The NRA will work to ensure this constitutional victory is not transformed into a practical defeat by activist judges defiant city councils or cynical politicians who seek to pervert, reverse or nullify the Supreme Court's McDonald decision through Byzantine labyrinths of restrictions and regulations that render the Second Amendment inaccessible, unaffordable or otherwise impossible to experience in a practical, reasonable way.”

As a party to the case, the NRA participated in oral arguments before the Court in March. The NRA persuasively argued that the Second Amendment applies to state and local governments through the Fourteenth Amendment and that handgun bans, like those in the City of Chicago and the Village of Oak Park, are unconstitutional under any standard of judicial review. This same view was shared in friend of the court briefs by a bipartisan group of 309 members of Congress from both chambers, 38 state attorneys general, and hundreds of state legislators. Public opinion polls show that it is also shared by the overwhelming majority of the American people.

“This decision makes absolutely clear that the Second Amendment protects the God-given right of self-defense for all law-abiding Americans, period,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “Ironically, while crime in Chicago runs rampant and lawmakers there call on the National Guard for help, Mayor Daley has insisted on leaving the residents of his city defenseless. Today's opinion puts the law back on the side of the law-abiding. We will be watching closely to make sure that Chicago abides by both the letter and the spirit of the Supreme Court's decision.”

Their statement is misleading Alex. They WERE NOT a party to the suit UNTIL they petitioned the court to let them have time in the oral arguments and it was granted. They had put up no money, time or effort prior to that. Do your research and you'll see that's right.

Here you go Mr Graybeard. Here is just a one second search and look what I found. Looks like the NRA has been there longer then you all are saying.  Look at the dates..

National Rifle Association v. City of Chicago (a parallel case to McDonald v. Chicago) is a court case now pending on petition for certiorari at the United States Supreme Court, during the 2009–2010 session.[1] On September 30, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear McDonald v. Chicago and held NRA v. Chicago.[2] The petitioners seek to overturn a handgun ban in Chicago, Illinois as unconstitutional. This case was filed shortly after the filing of McDonald v. Chicago, and both of these cases follow the landmark Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, which held that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protected an individual right to "keep and bear arms."

The present case was filed by Stephen Halbrook.[3][4] The trial court entered judgment in favor of the City of Chicago on December 18, 2008.[5] The NRA appealed the decision to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Oral argument was May 26, 2009, and the court issued its opinion on June 2, 2009, rejecting the appeal and letting the handgun ban stand[6] The NRA has filed a petition for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court.[7]

The main question that will resolve the case is whether the Heller decision applies to states and municipalities (like Chicago) in the same way it applies to the federal government, a question not resolved in Heller. This matter is known in Constitutional Law as incorporation.

Sorry Alex, I looked it over top to bottom and find nothing there but the transcript of the presentation before the court. It in no way mentions any NRA involvement prior to their last minute request to be heard which was in my opnion inappropriately granted.

They were given the opportunity up front to participate from the get go by the folks who actually carried the load on this and they refused. It is clear to all not blinded by loyalty to them they dropped the ball on this one.

I'm not gonna get into a big argument with you over the NRA again as it's clear our views are 180 degrees apart on them. some day tho you will see them for what they are. Of course by then it likely will be too late.

Your are right Graybeard we don't see it the same. This is one of the gun sites that has more anti-NRA people on it. But even with the number registered, there is just a drop in the bucket of the Anti-NRA gang.

I feel good, at the shooting range today I talked 4 people out of joining the GOA. They are NRA members that thought it would be a good thing to support all pro-gun groups, up until I told them how the GOA bashes the NRA. But you will NEVER see the NRA bash another pro-gun group. The GOA is hurting themselves more and more every time they attack the NRA..

I will keep my Life membership with the NRA and donate to them instead of joining the GOA. I encourage more people to do the same..

NRA 4 Million strong....  ;D

The way the NRA is acting today..............It's more like 4 MILLION WRONG.

(Not really) There are millions of great (NRA members) few if any leaders that are worthy of their support.

You feel good about talking four people out of joining one of the better gun lobby's?
You should feel ashamed of yourself instead. :'(. You might apply for a front office job......Wayne La-te-da likes your kind of support.

Beats the GOA, any day.. Larry Pratt is not the kind of person I will ever support.. Do some research on the founder of the GOA.....  I have.

Not ashamed at all. I do it all the time and will every chance I get. Put your money where you like, but the NRA is where mine is going..

GB, and nw_hunter, it should be obvious that STEALING is ok if the NRA is the one doing the thievery. An NRA WORSHIPER cannot be swayed. They are blind to the immoral, and unethical deed in this case.
