I am really glad that I started researching Ruger #1's here on GBO.

Naively, I thought that they would be incredibly accurate like the classic Martinis, etc.
However, there are a lot of comments that talk in terms of "hunting" accuracy.

Ironically, most any premium bolt rifle will turn out 1 moa groups ... at less than half the price!   
Also, most of the better m16 clones in the Ruger #1 price range will turn out 1 moa groups.             
In fact, apparently, the new Ruger Mini 14s, at about half the price, will match the Ruger #1 groups.       

What the heck is going on here?

The #1s can be made to shoot.  It just takes more work.

I believe Remington only came in their model 721 series in 300 H&H which is the model before the 700's. I could be wrong. Now if you had a Remington model 700 in 8mm Rem. mag. or 375 H&H and rebarrel it into a 300 H&H. ;)

Remington did make a model 700 classic in 300 H&H Magnum.

I wouldn’t recommend re-barreling an 8mm Remington Magnum or 375 H&H Magnum these are both stellar cartridges and cannot be touched by any 30 caliber rifle magnum or otherwise.

Alot has happened with the Number 1 over the years. John Barsness wrote a great article about that recently. The early ones have a Douglas barrel, they tended to shoot well. Then for years Ruger bought cheap barrels & they shot poorly. The forearm hanger does enter the picture at times & it can be fixed in a variety of ways.
The new barrels are made by Ruger & they are quite good. Almost EVERYONE I know who has bought a NEW one in the last 2 years or so have said there's is accurate. And I have heard this from people I trust, not internet chatter by someone who has read of past problems or someone who bought one years ago. You will get these same "opinions" if you ask about Barnes bullets concerning accuracy, the 264 Mag not being any better than a 270 (one of my favorites), 220 swift burning out a barrel in 500 rds., blah, blah.

If you want a Number 1, buy it, I must believe that, I just bought one in a 264WM, we will know about the accuracy of that one soon.

 ;D I was rather interested in the statement can't be touched also...to me the .375 H & H is a great round, but for different hunting that the .30 calibers...I am sure for shooting sheep or medium game at long range, the .375 would be out classed by the 30's...as for the 8 mag. it never was success ..too close to the .338s and they have a better bullet selection...I never used a 8mm ofany type.., but I have used a number of 338 caliber rifles...when I compare 338's to similar rounds in 30 caliber in killing power I saw none..usually the 30's shot flatter, with a lighter bullet, but with premium bullets I get all the penetration I need from a good .30 cal. rifle...I have a 340 now..it was a gift from a friend, but if it were not for that, I doubt it would live in my gun cabinet very longIt doesn't kill and better than a .30 caliber but is does kick more..,  when I feel the need for more bullet wt. than givenby a good .30 caliber, I would move up to my .375 .... the .375 does offer a much larger bullet and dia. than the .30 so for me it is the next logical step up from a .30......as for the 8mm mag. being a stella performer the American buying public didn't think much of it......

Rare things are usually quite valuable.  An accurate Ruger would be worth plenty.

357,  I am not sure number 1's sell like hot cakes....when i travel I look at all the used gun shops I can find...don't see many number 1's there, or on the shelves new in many parts of the country..one of my shooting pals like them...and so do I, but he has gone to mostly bolts for his hunting, and I sold the last two I owned for the same reason...they were not accurate...the .270 would not hold its zero, and the .300 H & H was not a consistanly good shooter...it was in bolts, but not the number one...I have also had a couple in Swift and a 6mm...still mourn the 6 mm, it had the most beautiful wood I have ever seen on a factory stock...but in those days I had to sell a rifle to get another...the number one was just not pratical for the hunting I was doing then, but I wish I would have or could have kept it..........

We will see how this 264 does, I should start shooting it in about 3 weeks. Not a big risk actually, I have allready had offers to buy the rifle, by some who would be happy with a 1-1.5" rifle. If I can't get it under .75" it's gone, but if I were to bet on it I would bet it will.

The proof's in the shooting.

Lots of good info on getting #1s to shoot on the web.  The last Ruger I owned took about 3-4 weeks of daily tinkering.

Nomosendaro  It will be interesting to see how this turns out with the .264....and a number one...I had pretty old ones, nothing with in the last couple years...as I said I had trouble with consistant acc. from one and point of impact changes and accuracy from the other...my best 264 was an old model 70 I bought for a song, after I got out of college....foolishly let some of my "pals" talk me into trading it for a Sako....they husseled right down to the gunshop and bought it.....It was a shooter....my last one was a rebarreled 700...I really liked the cartridge and the rifle, but I never could nail down a consistantly accurate load...when i thought I had it down several times....I loaded ammo for the next hunt, only to go out and find 3 inch groups from it...fustrating to the max...several friends have older 700's with fact. barrels that shoot fine...I really wanted that rifle to do well. shot quite a bit of game with it, but finally fustration set in and I rebarreled to something else....good luck...hope this one is a shooter and a fast one...with all the new powders and bullets on the market, this caliber could take on a new life...hope so.......

I appreciate that. I had a Number 1 in 7 Mag in 1980 & had it 3 years or so, I could only get 1.5" with it, so I sold it. I hope that the recent improvements are real. Yes, the 264 is a sleeper with today's powder & new high BC bullets. Wayne Van Zwoll says he reaches 3300 with a 140 safely, this was in a recent Hunting Mag article. In another article he lists a load with the 140 Hornady @ 3,346fps. With a 140 Berger backed off to 3200 it is a lazer for that wt. bullet & when you drop to lighter bullets it mirrors 257 Wea. performance at comparable wts, actually slightly flatter.

 :o  Nomosendaro, Wow, those are interesting figures...I have not kept up with the gun magazines for several years now...I don't care for most of the writers and found few that I have any faith in...but this is interesting...PLEASE let me know how this project turns out...I would love to get another .264,  looked at several Rem. 700's in Casper, but could not get over the tough time I had with the last one..... a 140 at 3300 is moving right along..that would be a super long range deer/antelope/coyote round......if it is not tooo much trouble, what powders was he using to achieve that speed?????????????????????/
