Winchester 94 Cross Bar Safety
« on: November 26, 2003, 04:01:13 AM »
I have a Winchester 94 with the silly cross bar safety.  I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace/modify so it is always off.  Are there kits to do this?

There is a bolt in device that replaces the safety in the Marlins and Winchester levers.  Brownells used to handle them.  Call them at 800-741-0015 and ask for the tech line..  they will give you the details.  It requires the safety assembly be taken down but that's not overly difficult.  It does not however deal with the extra trigger travel and poor trigger action created by the addition of this safety mechism.  BE AWARE--the removal or disabling of ANY safety mechanism, reguardless of it's necessity may have legal ramifications should anything involving the rifle ever happen..  God forbid..  The safety is redundant and reduces the rifles effectiveness.  Email the companies with your complaint and let them know that until it is removed you won't be buying their product.  Buy older rifles(used) or just don't.  Winchester is moving the safeties on their M94 to the tang.  An improvement I suppose but I don't know how it affects trigger action...

Thank you for the help. I called Bronells and they did not have any kit.  So here is what I did, I removed the hammerstop. After I removed it, I decided to try a little modification. The worst part of the hammerstop is that stupid red flag sticking ot when the safety is off and how easy it is to accidentaly put on safety.

I took a dremel and cut 1/8 inch off of the red end of the hammer stop bar, saving the end. Next I cut off all of the remaining red portion of the bar and a bit more to make the bar the same width as the receiver minus the right side recess. After that I silver soldered the end back on. The saftey still works now but does not stick out when ready to fire. When in the fire position the bar is flush with both sides of the rifle. Although there is still a recess in the right side of the receiver, this is a HUGE improvement.
