What 20 ga to get? (dropping down from 12 ga)
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:28:54 PM »
Well I've always used a 12ga but the recoil is finally did me in :(. I am not giving up on the scatter gun just time to put the 12 away.
Now this is the problem, I don't which barrel to get. I like my 28" mod 12ga for squirrels and bunnies and want to get the likable 20ga.
I saw the a youth 20ga barrel and I like the sound of the 22" mod but would the 26" full be better for squirrels and bunnies.(compared to an 12ga mod.)
one last Question how hard does the 20ga ultra slug kick compared to 12ga 00 buck out the 28" mod.
Thanks for Your Time

My 20ga TDC is my go to small game shot gun. I even used it to take a tom with this spring at 36 paces.

Either the TDC or the 26" Pardner with screw in choke.

I'll second this motion,if it was mine though I would add open sights..make kinda modern "canoe gun"er trade musket...Remmy sluggers and open sighted smooth bores belong together ;)..I'd even go with the cheapest one with a modified barrel unless i was a serious turkey or duck hunter. :-\

Old Goat,

I have been using a 20 ga. H&R guns for about 13-15 years now. My first one was a 20 ga. Tracker I combo with 26" mod 20ga. barrel. Now I have a 20 ga. TDC and a 20 ga. Youth Compact with Walnut stocks. The TDC I use for squirrel, Dove, have used it for rabbit hunting and this year I'm going to use it for Duck hunting over decoys. The Compact is my brush gun.....What I mean is that I hunt rabbits behind beagle and the little compact is short, lite and easy to carry. The wife has a 20 ga.TDC with the rear stock cut to fit her. She uses this gun to hunt with and trap shoot with. All of these guns have the screw in choke tubes which I feel is a great thing to have. I believe you would not go wrong with a 20 ga. TDC or the shorter barrel compact with adult stocks iffen you can find one.

Good Luck!

Guys I went to my local Gun shop to this afternoon to trade my 12 pump on a pair of 20's. A use topper with 26" mod and a well used pardner(?) with 20" mod it may have ben cut down and re beaded? I figured I would get them both and send one in to H&R for a new barrel.
Oh, I should start over I called H&R and my newer NEF 12 ga end up not being as new as I thought, It's just to old to be re-barreled. So thats how I ended up with my pump gun in the Gun shop. I keep saying it's my pump gun but really I gave it to my wife a couple of years ago as a bump in the night gun. God bless her, last year she asked me to get her a pistol, but she could not decide on what she wanted 9mm, 380 or 38 sp. I gave up and we haven't spoken on it since.
Now back to the store, I am in the gun shop holding the topper dreaming of those bunnys getting fat in my garden and all those corn fed squirrels jumping from limb to limb. The owners wife side swiped my dreaming askin how's my wife and what she ended up getting pistol wise.
Well damed if my wife did not ended up with a S&W 38 special and I end up putting my word on holding the topper 26 a couple on more weeks . The best part is I bet my wife an't going to fuss at me eating an extra piece of bacon in the morning.

Thanks Guys I'll get me one yet and the TDC barrel put in it to make it multi purpose. My tah always said never forget a spoon can be a shovel.
