Blackhawk Convertable
« on: October 15, 2003, 03:26:40 PM »
I recently bought a BH Convertable in 45ACP and 45LC. Both will be loaded for plinking and shooting SA falling plates. I plan to try to duplicate the velocity of my ACP handloads in the LC using the same bullet. I want to be able to use the rounds interchangeably without having to make a sight change. Anyone done this? I'll be shooting mostly ACP rounds as that's what I shoot the most of in my other match guns. I load on a progressive for the ACP. The LC would be a single stage operation so I won't be shooting it much. What do you think, guys? Am I missing something here?

I have been loading a 230gr Hardball  45 Colt load using 10.5 grs of Win-231 and a Win LPP with very good results. It's about 1000fps and it's not powder position sensitive like most reduced loads seem to be. Setting the OAL at 1.680.   KN

LS,
My 45ACP load is a 230gr cast RN @ 760fps. It gives me a power factor of 174. It's quite accurate in my 1911s, and I am very satisified with it. Just wondering if I will have any problems loading the LC down to that level. I have no reason at this time to load any heavier loads for hunting. The ACP is just more efficient at this velocity range. Thanks for the replies guys!

I've loaded some 230 gr cast rn over 6.0 gr titegroup in .45lc cases.  It gives me 750 out of a 5 1/2" bbl Hartford model.  Should get you really close.    44 Man

44Man,
Thanks,
That's about the range I'm looking for. I have some loaded with 6gr of Bullseye to chrono. Acording to my data it should be pretty close as well. I need to spend a day at the range with several of my toys and a chrono. I'm way overdue!! Little things like work and work around the place keep getting in the way.

try a 250 cast with 8.0 grains of unique should be close little heavier and a little faster should put it close to the same poa. You might have to bump it up or down .5 to 1.0 grains. every gun is different.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk Convertable .45 L.C. / .45 ACP also. Just a note that Natchez has Federal American Eagle .45 ACP ammo on sale for $8.35 a box of 50 if you buy a case, (20 boxes). Thats $167.00 for 1,000 rounds. This is 230 Gr. FMJ ball, brass case. You would be hard pressed to buy the brass and bullets in bulk and load it yourself for that price.  Bill T.

Bill T,
That is a good price for factory ammo in 45ACP.  I load Valliant cast bullets over a charge of Bullseye with a Winchester LP primer for about .05 a round, using range brass. By the way, if you reload the AE brass, it must be post sized, to chamber in anything I have in 45ACP. It is thicker than any brass I have used.

Be sure to seat those 230gr bullets a little deeper than normal in that long case, helps combustion, and use 5-5.5gr (probably 5.5) of the same Bullseye you have and you should on target.  If you can find them, the hollow base swaged 230gr slugs from Star Bullets are exceptionally accurate.  Apparently the hollow base makes them very compatable, and is the same shape as factory Colt loads.

I've found a load of 8 gr. of BlueDot and a 230 gr TCSWC in the .45acp and and 8.5 gr load of GreenDot and 255 gr. SWC GC bullets in the .45 Colt cases work well in my Convertable, and shoot to the same POA.

Savage,

When you say post sized do you mean after it's loaded like thru a Lee Factory Crimp Die with the carbide sizer ring?  Bill T.

Yes, I forgot to mention seating depth.  I'm at work, so I can't give you oal, but I have the cast 230 gr rn seated as deep as possible.  There is very little of the shoulder of the bullet above the case.  Hope this helps.  Good shooting!   44 Man

I just ordered 1,000 rounds of the Federal American Eagle .45 ACP from Natchez. It should be here by next Friday. That will keep the .45 ACP cylinder stoked in my Blackhawk thru the winter. $202.02 delivered. Bulk 230 Gr. bullets and brass from Midway would have run me $238.00 without powder, primers, or shipping. Damn good deal. This price will last only until present inventory runs out.  Bill T.
