Ruger-CZ-Kimber
« on: August 17, 2003, 02:05:47 PM »
I am considering a new 22lr rifle.  I have narrowed it down to the following:
Kimber Hunter Model
Ruger 77/22 stainless
CZ 452 American

I have not shot any of these, would appreciate all experiences with each.
I have owned a Kimber of Oregon 22 in the past with lack luster results.  I am curious if the new ones are better. THANKS

I don't have personal experiance with the guns you mentioned. The guys at the range who shoot rimfire silhouettes all shoot CZ rifles or at least the ones that don't have an ansultz.

I've got a K77/22RP, which is the SS 77/22 LR w/o sights. The rifle is just plain accurate and reliable. I've also got a 10/22 SS/Laminated and the 77/22 outshoots it easily. Both rifles wear the same scope and both have had trigger work done to them, so things are pretty much equal. I don't measure groups at all, but the 77/22 will hit anything that you aim it at. Squirrels, pests, and varmints are no problem for it. I let a friend shoot it and he immediately went out and bought the exact same rifle. I did take the silly "bootloop" sling attachments off of the "old style" Ruger stock and replaced them with conventional sling swivel studs. Uncle Mikes make the kit for this purpose, BTW. The sad part of it all, is that I really don't use my 77/22 very much anymore. MI VHNTR

MI VHNTR Do you want to sell the 77/22?
I have found a 77/22 stainless with open sights for $379.00.  How is this price?

SHW, the price that you've found for the 77/22 appears to be quite good. I just looked on Auction Arms at 77/22s and the cheapest one was $399, with prices going up to $450+. I'd sell you my 77/22, if you are interested in it. I'll have to wait until Friday to do too much about it, since I'm bringing my daughter to college early tomorrow morning. I'll PM you with some info on the rifle. MI VHNTR

I own the cz varmint and I have ejection problems from time to time but not so much so since I altered the sping on the side of the holder. I plan to keep it as the rest of the rifle seems pretty sound. It is very accurate 5 shot groups in the .300's is often what I get at the range. At 50 yds.

I live just up the road from you in Paragould.  I have the C.Z. American with a 4-16 Tasco mounted on it.  It is great.  Drop me an e-mail and you can come up and shoot it if you like.  carpx at swbell.net.

SHW,

Of the three choices you mentioned(Kimber Hunter Model, Ruger 77/22 stainless and the CZ 452 American) I have had experience with two of them.  I once tried the Kimber Hunter and it wasn't up to what I expected in accuracy from a .22 so I traded it back to the store for a Ruger 10/22.  I know accuracy wise I got the better end of the deal on that one.  I own three Ruger M77/22's, VHZ in .22 Hornet and standard models in .22 WMR and .22 lr(rebarreled for the longer barrel).  Accuracy is great.  I have had no problems with any of them.  I though about getting a 77/17 and tried one but didn't care for the price of the ammo so the rifle is back at the store.  Lawdog

Thanks for the info.  I may be sorry later, but I bought the Kimber.  I KNOW I KNOW probably not worth the money, but I had to try one of the new ones.  Now what scope? THANKS

I love the Kimber Hunter.  For $200 more than the 77/22 I feel it is worth the money.  Great trigger & overall feel-- accuracy has been excellent with several brands of ammo.  However the squirrells don't like it. :-D

I have a Kimber Model 82 and a CZ American in 17 HRM. Not comparing the calibers, I have to say the Kimber is a much nicer rifle BUT i don't have any problems with either. There is a considerable price difference between the two and if I was looking for a shooter, I'd get the CZ. The only thing that is a little strange on the CZ is the safety. It is backward from American firearms, you push it forward to put it on safety. You get used to it but it might cause some confusion for some. I don't know if it is just the caliber or what but the CZ is one of the most accurate rifles in my safe.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Just to offer an opinion for those shopping - I have three CZs ( Special, Ultra Lux and American), all in 22lr.  I just purchased a Kimber SVT and though I love my CZs, the Kimber out shoots them.  My first three shot group at 100yds with the Kimber was a clover leaf with no paper in the center!  I don't do that often but it is a real shooter, not uncommon to shoot sub 1" @ 100yds.    That said, the CZs are very accurate and a lot less money. The CZ triggers are tuned and they are light but with some pretravel, the Kimber trigger is light and breaks like glass.  I do not see me ever parting with any of the above but the Kimber will be seeing a lot more sunshine than the Czs.  It is my opinion that the CZs are the best bang for the buck by far in the 22 market, but if you can afford a Kimber and it fits you correctly, you will not regret the purchase.

I have experience with only one of the rifles that you mention, the Ruger. I own a 77.22 lr VBZ (stainless heavy barrel lam. stock) it shoots like a house afire .3's-.4's at 50 yd. sub MOA at 100 on a good day, but this came to be only after a generous application of cash for after market tuning of the barrel and action. It is a really nice rifle but for the money I could have probably bought a rifle that would shoot like this right out of the box.

WELL I'V READ  ALL THE ABOVE.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS WITH THE GUN BENCH OR HUNT (I HUNT).
I'M A SQUIRREL HUNTING NUT.
I HAD A KIMBER SVT I WOULD HUNT WITH(TO HEAVY).
I HAD A RUGER SSTL 22LR, RUGER SSTL22M BOTH WERE JUNK OUT OF THE BOX.
BUT HAVE HAD FRIENDS RUGERS SHOT OK.
RUGER IS EITHER GOOD OR BAD OUT OF THE BOX.
I GOT TWO CZ'S THIS YEAR 22LR AND 17 BOTH ARE VERY ACCURATE.
THE 22LR SHOTS AS GOOD AS MY KIMBER SVT .2 TO .25" GROUPS AT 50 YARDS NOT (100) I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ANY 22 SHOT THAT GOOD AT 100 YARDS, TO MUCH TO PLAY WITH IT AT THAT YARDAGE.
THE CZ'S WILL NEED A VERY GOOD CLEANING (NEW) AND A GOOD BREAK IN. BUT THEY GET BETTER ALL THE TIME.
STAY AWAY FROM THE NICKEL CZ THE STOCK MOUNT LOCATION WAS NOT GOOD. I HAD ONE IT DID NOT SHOOT GOOD.
I'V KILLED 52 SQUIRRELS ALREADY THIS SEASON WITH THE CZ 22LR WITH FEDERAL GOLD ULTRA MATCH (ALL HEAD ALL DEAD).
WELL HOP THIS HELPS.

cz/brno rifles

:D Ive read with interest the discussion on the choice of cz rifles. We have had the good fortune of having these rifles in Australia since 1946. My rifle is a 1950 model 1 - looks almost identical to the current model except the wing saftety is slightly different and the trigger is different. Its provided me with faultless operation/pleasure for 34 years.
I now shoot the rifle in sporter class BR rimfire - it keeps me in A grade (193/200 average - 9mm bulls eye at 50metres bestedge marking)
Im waiting on the arrival of a T 6 weaver for this gun. 90% of the sporter weight rifles that I see in comps are cz/brnos.
To give you an idea of accuracy - I mounted a 6-24 tasco target to shoot BR 30 match (total weight 6.9ponds) and sighted it in on a standard 50metre prone target - it marked out at a 199 off the bench.

You cant go past these rifles
