help identifing a rifle Sharps & Hawkins

Hey guys I'm not much into these so don't know much about them. A guy at work asked me about a old gun. He said he found it in an old house. He thought it was a old single barrel shotgun. I looked at it and now I wondering about it. It is in rough shape somebody took a grinder to it. On one side it says Sharps & Hawkins and under that it looks like Philidelphia  on the other side it says Sharps pat 1869 It is a single shot carbine the trigger guard comes down like a lever and the whole barrel slides forward about 2 or 3 inches, to load the cartridge.  I'm guessing it is 45 cal maybe a 45/70 looks about the size of a 410 and is rifled. There is a sling swivel on the butt stock and no forearm. Don't know if it is missing or didn't have one. If any of you guys know anything about it I would appreciate the info. Or where I might find out about it.  thanks thomas

may be a sharps & hawkins navy carbine in( if memory serves) 52 rimfire.

I believe that is what it is. It could possibly have been used in the Civil war. It was found in an old house from that era. There was a good bit of fighting going on in central MS  Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate it.

Guys he wants to sell if any of yall are interested.  I offered $50 but he said more. I have pics I can email. One thing though the "genuis" took a side grinder to it to clean it up. I told him not to, but he said it would be worth more "cleaned up". What a DumbA$$.  It is in poor pitiful shape, definitely not a shooter. More of a wall hanger. PM me will email photos. Thanks

I think what you have is a Sharps Hankins Navy Rifle , That had a leather barrel cover.

you can tell your friend that an original Sharps and Hawkins in "excellent" condition, with an intact worn leather barrel cover recently went for $2400 at auction.

However, "cleaning" in any way kills the value. Literally kills it. taking so much as steel wool and oil to the finish, would drop the price to a few hundred bucks.

Touch it with sandpaper or grinders and he just turned an antique into a parts gun.
