Hard to find data for 1:9. Seems everything is based on 1:12 or 1:7. I had a NEF 223 1:9 and had decent results with Varget and R-15, but got my best results with near max loads of H-380, for 40 to 65 gr bullets. I used the ladder method to come up with the optimal charge.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I have a Bushmaster AR-15 with a 9 twist and I shoot Sierra's Accuracy Load for the AR-15 for the 69 Match King. 25.3 grs Varget and it is very accurate. It will do a number on groundhogs also. Varget is really a good all round powder for the 223 with 52 gr and heaver bullets. You will not get the highest velocity with it but you will get accuracy.

I don't reload but I have 2 1-9 twist .223 rifles, a NEF survivor and an accurized mini-14.  both shoot right at 1moa.
They both require good ammo, no Wolf ect.
I am surprised that they shoot equally well with 50gr up to 75gr. bullets.
So I am thinking of buying an AR platform rifle and I think I will get a 1-9 twist.  Seems pretty versatile.

I have a savage with 1 in 9 twist--I shoot 45 grain and 50 grain bullets --they shoot real accurate---loads are in the Lyman manual--and I don't shoot max loads--somewhere in the middle range with no problems--the 1 in 9 isn't supposed to shoot the lighter buttets with any accuracy--but mine does. I use IMR powder  4895 and 4198----I'm upstairs and the reloading room is downstairs so I don't have the exact information handy

I've got a 1:9 twist Handi-Rifle and was doing load development for it last week.  27.0 grains of RL15, a Hornady 55 grain V-Max and CCI primer turned in a half-inch group at 100 yards.  I'm pleased.

Here we go with twistisitis again. All your faster  twist is doing for you is alowing the use of longer/heavier bullets. All barrels regardless of twist will like and dislike some bullet/load combinations.A faster twist does NOT mean it won't shoot lighter bullets accurately. So if you have a slower twist...just don't use the longer/heavier bullets.

I agree with C&R, your biggest dilemma is going to be how heavy of a bullet will your gun stabilize.  I have a Savage 10PC which I believe is a twin to your gun (20", 1-9).  Mine stabilizes 77 Sierra MK's, but won't shoot 80's worth a darn.  Interestingly, a buddy has a savage .223 varmit rig with a 26" barrel that shoots the 80 MK really well.  I guess the extra 6" of barrel gives him a little more velocity and a faster spin.

FWIW, I saw on another thread recently where a guy claimed his sps tac wouldn't stabilize 75 Amaxes.  I see you have some to try out.  Be sure to let us know if they work in your gun.

Jim

I have a 1:9 twist, 22" barrel NEF Ultra and it will not stablize the 75 grain bullets.  The favorite load for this gun to date is:

60 Grain Seirra Varmiter
24.4 grain Ramshot TAC
2.37 OAL
Lee Factory Crimp, about 3/4 closed on the die
CCI SR Primer,

Gun also likes the Hornday 55 Grain SPs with 24.3 grn of TAC @ 2.3"

Neither of these are Max loads in my gun.

both of these loads will give about 3/4" 3 shot groups @ 100 yards, probably better with a younger shooter with better eyes.

I am not familiar with your gun so I don't know if these rounds being over 2.26" will be a problem in your gun's magazine or chamber.

I have also loaded these with Varget and it works okay but doesn't feed well in my progressive press, the TAC feeds very consistently.
