Let's step back a little for a moment. In no particular order of importance:

First, Polaris has huge brand loyalty, in the ATV/snowmobile field there are a lot of folks who are just as loyal to Polaris as the H-D faithful are to their brand. I'm confident that Polaris thinks this is what they need to do to remain competitive.

Second, in Cheesehead's second post, he says, "The village president says all operations will be moved to Mexico in the next couple of years." If she did indeed say that, I question her source. Why would the president of a self-described village be privy to the long-term business plan of a company the size of Polaris?

Third, it's being reported in the Twin Cities media (Mpls/St. Paul) that the Osceola plant manufactures seats. Sourcing seats from Mexico is a far cry from moving the entire company to Mexico...

Fourth, the article in the link in Cheesehead's first post states that some of the jobs will go to Roseau, MN (Polaris' ancestral home) and Spirit Lake, IA (main Victory plant, IIRC). It also says that the jobs are going to be "ramped down" over 18-24 months. While we have no way of knowing how many jobs will go to the MN/IA plants, or to know how many jobs will be cut how quickly. At least they're giving folks a heads-up. Thankfully, I've never had the experience of coming in to work and being told that I'm done, effective immediately. Unfortunately, there's been a lot of that going on lately, across the board, in many industires.

OK, new post to continue my thoughts. I'm having problems finishing the first post in its original box.

Fifth, Polaris has been using foreign parts for years. I'll give the example of ATV and snowmobile engines sourced from "Fuji Heavy Industries." I'll give you a hint, "Fuji Heavy Industries" ain't frpm MN, WI, or IA! ;D

Sixth, any manufacturing company faces similar problems in today's global economy. For example: Red Wing shoes, Buck Knives, Danner boots, and Chicago Cutlery. All have long symbolized quality American-made products, among the best available. All are making some of their wares in China, and have been for years. I try to buy American-made, but sometimes for one reason or another, it's just not practical. For the record, I've had five pairs of U.S.-made Danner boots, with Gore-tex linings. Four of them leaked like seives, one was watertight. I've had three pairs of Chinese-made Danners, also with Gore-tex linings. None of them leak. I just ordered two more pair of the Chinese-made Danners...

H-D has used a lot of parts over the years that are sourced from Asian companies. Hitatchi (electronics) and Showa (forks/shocks) come to mind. Showa owned by... gasp... Honda. (Don the flame suit, NOW!!! :D)

I've been to Osceola many times, and it's a great place. I've eaten ice cream and pizza there, gone to the city park with the waterfall, canoed the St. Croix river, and swung on a rope swing over the river. I'm sorry they're losing such an important employer. I do wish them the best in these hard times.

i just knew people would start bashing unions on this thread.   entirely to predictable-even though no union is involved with polaris.   even so, i bet if polaris came out and announced the unions were to blame, there would be plenty of people to pick up that ball and run with it.   ::)
They will make ATV's and snowmobiles in Mexico?
maybe they could modify the snowmobiles for water skipping and use them to cross the rio grande.   just sayin'.....

Now I really hate em.

Cheese >:(

Hmmm, same place some of those "American" cars/trucks are made and from what I understand where a bunch of chrome parts (HD?) come from.  Hate those too?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....I am saving most of my Hate for Polaris for now. I am not in the mood to defend this horrific example, like you. I buy Amercan most of the time, I make a special effort to do this.
