Backyard plinking fun
« on: December 29, 2003, 06:26:15 PM »
Hey Guys, went to the local flea market last sunday and bought a couple of those 1/18 scale die cast cars for $2 each, they were a bit beat up so I bought them just to plink at.
Man that was fun watching the mirrors and chrome bits fly off in all directions
shot the headlights off the Volkswagon Beetle, put about 100 shots into that sucker, looked like it came out second best in a gangster shootout.
Great way to piss away the afternoon...
Any of you guys shoot unusual stuff in your backyard?

Sounds like fun!
For my backyard fun, I shoot the starlings that try to take over my birdfeeders.
We get all sorts of interesting birds in our backyard, including chickadees, downy woodpeckers, flickers, etc.  Occasionally, we get a real treat and see a Coopers hawk snag one of our sparrows out of the yard and land in a nearby tree to munch it down.
However, the starlings come in like a gang of flying rats and take over.  Not a good idea if I'm home.  I'll use either my R-1 5mm, FWB 124, or FWB 65 to dust 'em.
Starlings are the ONLY birds I shoot.  The other birds seem to know this.  I've taken a starling off the feeder with the FWB 124, that was right next to a flicker.  Flicker didn't budge.  Went right back to eating!

Yeah, we get Indian Mynah birds here, they fly in and crap all over our patio furniture and eat my dogs food.
He used to chase em' but he's too lazy so I have to "pursuade" them not to come back.

My best shot was from 25feet kitchen window to the bottom of the garden Mynah bird sitting behind a railway sleeper in the garden bed, I could only see the top part of his head but that was enough- one dead Mynah.

Damn they're smart though easily spooked. :P

The FWB Sports are just wonderful to snipe starlings with, I prefare to use my Sport rather then my "big-rig" AA TX.

Sometimes I use the fast 3-way poweradjuster down to "low" in my .22 Cutlas Carbine for 6 ft/lbs, just enough to bring them down.

I agree with ya, Johnny.  The 124 Sport is maybe the best sporting spring-piston made.  Excellent combination of light weight, easy cocking, outstanding accuracy, and very good power.  To damn bad they are no longer made.
My Beeman R-1 in 5mm has more power, but is harder to cock and much larger and heavier.  For larger critters the R-1 is the way to go.
For starlings and such it is complete overkill.
If I could only have one spring-piston rifle, it would be the 124 Sport.
