When I load my gun with a clean barrel it seems like the ram rod goes in an extra 1/16 to 3/32 than when I'm at the range. When I am shooting it time after time I still run a spit patch down the barrel between shots but it seems like it bottoms out a little sooner than on a clean barrel here at home before I go hunting or to the range.  I'm wondering if a little crud accumulates around the breech plug from pushing the spit patch down.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Buck, I noticed the same thing with my Encore I think it might just be a buildup on the breechplug. Doesn't seem to be a problem at least not with accuracy. Which breechplug do you have?
#1 deep concave within thin wall
#2 flat
#3 deep concave with thick wall

I have a #1 plug my gun is about 4 yrs old.

Actually now that I think back I remember it with both Cleanshot and 777.

I've got the #3 with the hornet conversion.  I missed a 130' buck last night at 115 yds.  I'm not sure how.  I had the barrel resting on the railing of the stand when I fired, if that makes any difference.  When I'm at the range I have my hand under the forearm.  One other thing, do the rest of you guys tap on your powder measurer and your gun ofter you put the powder in to get compaction.  If I put 115 gr of powder in my measurer and then tap on it a few times it will settle down to 105 gr.  Thanks

personally, I tap the barrel once after loading the powder, just to get it all down. tapping a charge in the powder measure is asking for accuracy problems, because you can never duplicate the same compacting consistently. the buildup with t-7 is common. you may want to experiment with the bore butter cleaning method. othewise a wet patch after each shot will probably do the trick.

Buck, I always set my powder measurer to what I want then fill it and then dump it in. Somehow I think that tamping it down may cause inconsitency. As far as resting the gun on the barrel I would think thats a bad practice. It could change the harmonic vibration of the barrel causing inconsitency. If its possible alway rest the gun on the forend.

Buck, you say that you still get the crud ring even using the Hornet conversion? Wow I thought maybe the cooler ignition would help alleviate the problem. I was going to go that route, but for now I'll stick to my Winchester 209 primers. By the way do you carry a cleaning kit in the woods with you? I know I can shoot two shots without spit patching the bore, but loading the third shot is tough. I carry a takedown rod and dry patches in my bag, with all the other goodies.

Last week I shot a 3 pt, he took off running I went over and confirmed the hit then went back to my seat spit patched the bore, and reloaded. I waited about 15 minutes walked about 90 yrds there he was laying dead in the pines.

No buildup with Goex cleanshot.  I shot 12 times at the range this weekend and no problems at all.  No cleaning between shots or anything. Non corrosive and no buildup.   I dont know why anybody messes with 777 or pyrodex.
