Folks, this is real naive territory for me.

If I had a Savage 308 and I wanted to rebarrel it for 30 Remington, what changes would have to be made apart from the new barrel and rechambering it?

I don't know how bolt faces play a role nor do I know about extractors.

The 308 case base is .473 and the 30 Rem case base is .422.

Thanks.

Usually folks want a bigger case head and that's an easier fix. You may get y with that much siae differential but i really doubt it. If a properly sized action couldn't be found(pretty unlikely a shim or washer woukld have to be made to reduce the size of the bolt face. Personally I believe I'd just load the 308 down a bit..

Sharpshooter Supply addresses this when converting a Savage to 7.62X39. Either use a 308 bolt head with a longer extractor and no ejector (single shot) or open up a .223 bolt head and use a shorter extractor. But I would agree with Gunnut, since 30 rem brass is somewhat hard to come by you might be better off with another caliber. If you don't mind wildcats a 30x223 improved works quite well for about the same ballistics and easier to get brass.

Good advice.

Maybe it's just me, but I would think the .300 Savage a better choice/match in a Savage rifle.

Folks, thanks for the answers. I am trying to understand the mechanics of such a thing rather than having my mind set on that kind of conversion. But the neat thing about the replies is that you have already suggested three alternatives to match the performance of the 30 Rem - download 308, 30-223 and 300 Savage.

I am happy with the amount of info I have already.

If anyone really needs to provide more answers or clarifications, feel free to do so, I will not be unhappy.

Thanks again to the GBO family for providing timely and detailed info. You gotta love this forum/site/community.

Well if savage ever comes out with a bolt action in the 6.8spc your problems are solved since they used a beefed up 30 rem case for that caliber. Frank
