Be afraid..... Be very afraid..... ;D (as he laughs Maniacly)

A couple of years ago a friend was upgrading his wood shop and no longer had space for

A DELTA model 46-715 wood lathe which he gifted to me  ;D   having no room at home

I am setting it up at work, since I do some gages etc. for checking product it will come

in handy for that... it will also come in handy for turning wood patterns for cannon  ;D

my question for Zulu is what does he recomend as far as turning tools,  I picked up 3 this

past week end at an antique shop all good quality steel but I will need more than these,

what modern brands hold up well?  I have been sharpening my friends tools for almost 10

years now he has a mix many are Sears Craftsman....

Allen,
I use this company. http://www.packardwoodworks.com/

Wear a face shield to begin with. Wood can have a nasty habit of going into orbit while you are learning.

Kabar,
When I bought my lathe, I purchased a 5 piece Craftsman set.  As my skill level got a little better I decided to upgrade my tools. I spent big bucks on real nice Woodcraft tools.  After using them a lot, I decided I liked the Craftsman tools better.  I now use them almost exclusively.  The expensive stuff is okay but not necessary for what I do.  The Craftsman tools hold an edge well and sharpen easily on my Tormek sharpener.
Now the big question.  What are you going to make?  :o

That would be mice to have for my Sorby chisels and Ralph Bone scrapers.

If I recall correctly, I paid $400 for it.

Sharpening.........

I have had good success with my granddad's old oil stone it's probably 80 years old and still going strong,

if I have to reshape a blade I use a belt sander with a fine belt and then to the oil stone, so far my friend

has not had a complaint about how sharp his chisels are, I guess I got it right.

I think I'll get a Craftsman set as Zulu suggests my friend has been using them for years and they have held up well.

Sir Richard,

You know evilbay is one of the last places I tend to look..... I sold on there for some years..... and they became more & more P.C.
and continuosly banned items I sold changed the fee policy and force buyers & sellers to us their bank & their bank will seize peoples assets if they
feel you are dealing in prohibited items, I hate their system and now seldom use it I may look and see if there are any "bargains"....

small rant over....

Wow! You're a regular tiger ;D  So try eBay! ::)

I have a complete set and sharpening jigs and a first class wheel with great stones and all kinds of extras. None of it has ever been used. I bought it for my daughter. I also bought a mini lathe with a complete set of small knives for her.

Oh well!  At least the dog plays with what I buy her.

Kabar,
I bought a set of the HF HSS woodturning tools when I first got my minilathe +/- 10 yrs ago.  They have held up well and you could probably get  a set cheaper with a coupon from them.  Don't get hung up on the fact that they are from HF, they are fine steel and work well. If you can sharpen you should have no problems.

RC,
You've mentioned this before, and you also said that your daughter's planned project was going to be made of teak which you had already bought, but you never said what the abandoned work was going to be; now you've got my ears pricked up.
BTW: This can't be off topic, because for all I know she was intending to fashion a replica of a Columbiad.

John,
I have no idea. She also has a piece of kiln dried cherry that's (as I remember) probably 3" X 24" X 30" and perfect for a sea carriage.

I have some teak , black walnut and rosewood that I should sell off.  I have some gun stocks left that I rip for the wood too. Nice stuff for small cannons but.............I already have my hands full.
