new 45-70 barrel
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:21:12 PM »
turn around time was about 2 weeks, plesant suprise, good snug fit, mounted a 2 1/2X Norinco I had laying around, I know, should'nt do that to a 45-70, but at 78 years young, the eyes have a very difficult time focusing on three objects at the same time. loaded some virgin Rem brass with 55 gr of IMR 3031 behind 300 gr hp Hornadys with 9 1/2 Rem LR primers. after zeroing, 3 shot groups off sand bag rest, at 50 yds., never were more than 1 1/2 in., most just over 1 in. I know, that's not a tack driver, but it's a da** good fence post driver, tickles me to death. now, should be very effective on 100 lb. whitetails. not going to load any of those 500 gr solids, don't have many elephants here in PA.

You're gonna love hunting with that .45-70.  100 lb whitetails just fall over dead, even if ya miss, the muzzle blast gets em. ::)  Seriously, mine kills deer with authority.  It'll be after bear this Fall with 405s.  Good luck and good shooting.

Excellent choise in calibers.  As far as the scope goes, a man's gotta do what . . . well, you know.  Just keep shooting.  Good luck on the deer!
