35 Whelen bbl
« on: July 20, 2010, 06:58:02 AM »
Hi all, new here but been lurking on and off for quite a while.

I just spoke with H&R about adding a 35 whelen barrel, they said it should be available any day.  Does anyone have a good idea of timing for this?  The fellow I spoke with couldn't say if it would be hours or a couple months.

Also, he said they don't have/won't be offering 44 mag barrels with sights anymore and are trying to drop them from most of the other barrels.  Anyone know if there is pushback on this, or is this just a sign of the times?

BTW, thanks for all the knowledge/lessons learned you guys have stashed on this sight over the years.

Welcome! Accessory barrels are first come, first serve, they might have them when you call, but by the time they get to fitting your frame, who knows, if you really want one, best answer is to send a frame in and hope for the best, Jim36 waited 10 months for his not too long ago. Next best choice is buy a used barrel in the H&R classifieds here and fit it yourself, the FAQs sticky has information on how.....and a heck of a lot more info.

The 357 and 44 mag barrels haven't had sights for almost 2yrs now, so there won't be any going back to sights for those two accessory barrels, but you can get the Talo version with sights if you can find one, Davidson's still has them.

Thanks for the link Tim, I'd seen the word Talo on here but had no idea what it meant.  Right now I'm not looking to pick up a whole new rifle, can't really justify it.  But a couple of accessory barrels would probably slide by unnoticed by the wife.  I'll probably go ahead and send the gun in and wait, I like it when surprises show up unexpected.

A complete rifle isn't that much more than an acc barrel which will cost ~$150 by the time you pay shipping both ways, tax and fitting fee, ordering two barrels at the same time can trim that cost tho, I think their shipping cost covers 2 barrels.  :-\ The only issue with a 44mag rifle now is it comes on an SB1 frame which can only be fitted with shotgun barrels or 357mag, no 35 Whelen.

Understood.  This was much more attractive before they raised their barrel prices a few years ago, but is still the most affordable way to a 35 Whelen by a long shot.  The 44 mag barrel has been on my to do list for quite a while, I've been loading for my SBH for 20 years so this just adds a little more convenience.

I like to grab something different each time out, but didn't realize how much I depend on my Ultra V until I thought about sending it in.  The thought of a woodchuck or coyote not getting as warm welcome is unsettling.

And if you have 'issues' with the complete gun (like Jim, please see his posts re. his misadventures, and others re. that chambering) you may have more recourse to satisfaction than a fitted barrel.
