Old warhorses

By that I mean the old military rifles in the Deer woods, you don’t see to many of them any more, when I was a boy, early sixties you saw plenty of 94,s and 336,s . But it was nothing to come up on some one with an old 03 or 303, when I started hunting it was with an old 303, I mowed a bunch of lawns for that old rifle, My Granddad, always had his 3040 Krag, my Dad had a Marlin 336 back then. But I saw my share of Mauser’s as well as some Japanese and Italian, military Rifles. You did see modern rifles but it was just kind of neat seeing those old warhorses, still going strong. I think the Amish were about the last hold outs, I was still seeing a few of the Amish carrying them in the late 70,s but its very rare to see one today. Don’t get me wrong I would never want to go back to that old 303. Years ago people just didn’t have the money to spend on a modern Rifle and scope, and did the best they could. If you go to Grices gun shop, the story goes that’s how he got his start sporterizing the old 03s in a Gas station as a side line, but those old rifles straight from the arsenal  had character.

hornady,

Yep, I remember those military surplus shooters!  But, unfortunately, those who carried them back then sort of got laughed at!  I don’t mean the 94’s or 336’s, but the surplus ones that you could get for literally 25-30 bucks.  I have seen them in 55 gallon drums and I believe I saw some of them that way at Grice’s, and I have no idea how long ago that was!  Now some of them are sought after as the actions were very good.  Wish I would have purchase an entire drum of them!  But, I didn’t have the bucks back then…

I disagree with the Laughed at part of your statement, not un-like the guys that choose to hunt with Long bows or Flint lock rifles, over compound an inline, the old military rifles required much more skill to make a clean kill, and some guys were very effective with them, Other forms I go too there seems to be a small renewed interest in hunting with some of these old rifles.

I started deer hunting here in Michigan back in the 60's with one of those $25 "sporterized" .303 Enfields.

Of course like most I traded it off on a new rifle as soon as I could earn enough money.

About 12 or 13 years ago I came across a No. 4 Mk I that somebody had already cut down the forestock.  Put a ramp and firesight and a Williams Foolproof on it and have killed several deer with it.

I try to hunt at least a few days every year with it.  Makes a perfect rainy day gun.  I really don't feel I'm at any disadvantage using it versus a modern rifle with iron sights as most shots in the places I hunt are from 20 to 50 yards.
