Opinion on Saturday Bear opening
« on: December 21, 2010, 04:40:45 AM »
I just read an article in Pa, out door news about how some guys are refusing to buy a Bear License, so long as the opener is changed to Saturday. I talked to a couple guys that said they liked the idea of being able to go to Bear camp Friday night and scout, Saturday and Sunday, for a Monday opener. But that’s been the big complaint; it just seems to me, more guys will buy a License, if they don’t need to miss so much work. According to the article, the Saturday opener, will be discussed at the January commission meeting.

:) The Sat. opener was pretty well accepted by the locals I talked with, but they did NOT go to bear camp, but hunted familiar areas near their homes..so it really did matter to them I guess..Where I hunted, I was surprised at the FEW hunters involved...one thing that was good about it was my significant other's grandson got to go out for bear..since he is 14 he would have missed hunting bear this fall if not for the Sat. opener...I think the move is to enable younger hunters to hit the field for a hunt they may otherwise miss..Personally, I look for the Sat. opener to be expanded to deer season next year..for the same reasons..also the game comm. will entice folks home from out of state to buy a license for the Sat. opener that would not stay for the first day if it were on Monday..with the way the game is being managed in the state, they need to do all they can to boost sales of license... >:(

The same article said Bear would be brought up at the January meeting, as well as a Saturday Deer opener, now if they would get rid of the old Blue laws, and let us Hunt on Sundays

I like the Sat. opener.  Gives a guy who cant get off from work, or a kid in school a chance to hunt.  PA is one of the few states left with no Sunday hunting, and you cant hunt with a semi-auto rifle or handgun...

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

At one time I felt the semi ban made sense, but if you think about it, I have heard guys unload Lever and pump rifles pretty fast. The Sunday ban, because of the way guy’s work now compared to 30 years ago. It just makes sense to open up Sundays. It’s the only way I can see to increase License sales. Hunting can be a very expensive hobby. And with low Deer numbers in most Counties. Add on you can only get away from work a couple days a year, it’s a wonder license sales are not lower than they are.

I'm for semi autos for hunting we can already use shotguns and as for sunday hunting works for me I still have 3 kids in school and it would be more time in the field for them.

I think the idea of a Saturday opener for bear and deer in Pa is way past due.
It worked great this year for bear...I could take my teenage son without him missing school and I didn't need to schedule a vacation day...win-win.
Deer season should be changed to saturday opening, also.

It would be great to be able to hunt on Sunday, as well...it would double the number of days a year that I could hunt with my son...never saw any deer or bear in church, anyway.
