Who is hunting with the lever action this year
« on: November 04, 2003, 05:41:47 AM »
Chris:  here in New York you can hunt with rifles in the Northern Zone, and that season stretches from before until after Southern Zone where you must hunt with a shotgun or pistol/revolver.  When I go trapsing around the Northern Zone areas I carry either one of my Winchester Big Bores in 444, a 1923 circa Winchester 94 in 30-30, or a Yugo Mauser in 8mm.  And all of that just in case I run into one of our famous Adirondack Black Bears.  HTH.  Mikey.

It is legal to use a rifle in a lot of the Catskills in the southern zone.
I will carry the .348 some of the season.
The northern season closes before the southern season.

This year it'll be the .356 Winchester.  If it draws blood then I will switch to my .375 Winchester.  Hopefully both will get a poke this year.  Been skunked the last three years.

For early season I'm carrying my Browning '95 and '86.  When they start running and the cold makes them a little more jumpy I'll probably switch back to one of my BLR's, 308 or 257.   Like using either my '92 44-40 or '94CL 25-20 if just chasing turkey for the day.

Rossi mod 92 in 45LC .... 300 grain jacketed corbon... I have never tried any of their stuff so I thought I would this year for grins.... to pricey to shoot much of.
Don't tell any tree huggers... I killed a smallish oak tree last night..

This year, as in many previous years, my Model 99 Savage in .300 Savage caliber will be my companion on the High Plateau of north-central PennsylvaniaÂ’s Moshannon State Forest where my hunting buddy has a cozy cabin, complete with a warming fireplace, among the mountain laurel.

My two sons, my Godson, his Dad and I will join my hunting buddy who lives about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh at his place for a week or so of deer hunting during Buck Season which begins December 1 this year.

While there are many fine deer cartridge/rifle combinations, I honestly believe the Model 99 Savage in .300 Savage is truly “THE” best example of a deer rifle/cartridge.  But then, I guess most of the folks who post here think the same thing about THEIR rifle/cartridge combination.

Like I saidÂ… there are many of ‘emÂ…     :P

I'll be starting out the season with a Model 71 .348 WCF, then a Model 64, .32 WS.
You mean to say there are rifles other than old Winchester leverguns ?

I'll be hunting with a Winchester Timber Carbine with a Leupold VariXIII 1.5-5x and Hornady 265's.  What a great little carrying gun.   DL

Wish I lived in a state where I could get out the 1895 45-70 or the Trapper 44mag, but I don't.  It will be the shotgun, Contender or ML for me again.  How dissappointing.

I got a 94 in 30-30 earlier this year. I had one years (25) ago and had forgotten how much fun they are.

I will probably use it for a brush gun since I sold the slug gun earlier.

I'll use a .243 for my stand gun and the 300 WSM over the ag fields.

I have a torn rotator cuff, so I am going to have to use something easy on the shoulder.  I probably will hunt with my Rossi Model 92 in .44-40.  After hunting season, I will have to see about surgery.

I have a few. A Winchester model 88 308Win. with a Tasco 3x9-40mm but soon I'm gonna put a Leupold VX II 3x9-40mm, A Marlin 336CS 35Rem. I have a Williams peep sight and fire sight on it, A Marlin 444 with the 22 inch barrel and a Bushnell Banner 1.5x4.5-32mm scope on it. I bought a Winchester model 94 356Win. I gave it to my dad. I'am not really crazy about the model 94's I'd much rather have a Marlin, but my dad likes it and I couldn't pass on it, the price was to good.  :-)

It's too bad that deer season has ended here in Cal. I carried my most reliable Winchester '86 33WCF with negative results. Our little group has decided that we will take only 3(western count) pt or better bucks. Passed up several nice big forkies, too. Oh well, there's always next year.
I get my kicks from an 1886.

I agree with Ron T.  It'll be a vintage Savage 99 in .300 for me again.  Best and most accurate lever rifle I have ever owned.  That's my observation among the many fine lever guns out there.

Update on my post above...Timber Carbine was a great carrying little gun and a joy to shoot.  Did the trick on this little Maine six pointer...

I'm a little late getting in on the recycling of this thread, but I used my BLR in .358 Winchester this season, and managed to score on a small 7 pointer and a medium sized 8 pointer.

I'm using a Marlin 1894P Guide Gun in 44 Mag with a Williams receiver peep sight on it. Ammo is my handloads using Speer 270 grain Gold Dot soft points, and Win 296 powder.

Marlin 444 lever action
« Reply #22 on: December 04, 2003, 03:19:16 AM »
Hi all :D
I took my Marlin 444 lever action, with a simmons scope on it, and harvested a 220 lb 7 point buck. The next day, I harvested my doe, so I limited out in 2 days here in Okla.
The bullet was a home made 300 gr. round nose flat point, that I made myself useing copper tubing with walls of .035 thickness, useing Richard Corbin swage dies. I took the buck from a tree tower stand at 07:45 A.M. and after hitting him right behind the right front shoulder and it penetrating the lungs and knocking him down, he only went for 20 yards and fell down, and never got back up. I never recovered the bullet. The buck sported a very unusual left splint beam with tines measureing about 14 inches. I`m having him mounted.

I'm  back out in deer woods with my Savage 99e in 308. As in the past two years I'll be using 125gr Nosler BTs. I was skunked the first two days, although a little half rack came by me twice.

:-D   I took my Whitetail (eighteen pointer) here in Oklahoma this season with my circa 1897 Marlin Model 1895 in .40-82WCF.  I used a Hawk .411 bullet (.025 jacket) over IMR 3031.  Hit him in the left front shoulder and he died where he stood....didn't move a foot. The bullet was a lump under the skin on the right shoulder side and I recovered it.  Hard to beat the oldies for hunting!!! [/img]

:D Thanks, Daddy, it was definitely a surprise for me.  That's the first Deer I've had the chance to shoot at with this rifle and was quite excited about it's performance.  It's very accurate and apparently has great power as a Deer killer.  I carried it all last year and didn't get to shoot once.

This year, I took the 1895, a circa 1901 Model 1893 in .38-55WCF and a circa 1884 Cogswell & Harrison double rifle in .450-.400 2-3/8" to hunt with.  Shot the Deer at 8:00 opening morning so didn't get to use the 1893 or the Cogswell.  Hey, there's always next season for those two!!

Where did you find that double? I'm not familiar with the caliber.

It was made in London and shipped to India where it spent most of its life.  Then, on to South Africa where I bought it from a California man whose wife's family is in South Africa.

It is a British black powder Express round...similar ballistically to our .40-82WCF.  Uses primarily paperpatch bullets.  Very slender, graceful little double.  My first year to experiment with it.  Hopefully, I'll have it fine tuned for next Deer season.
