Software to download to.
« on: July 02, 2010, 03:04:51 PM »
Okay I do not know much about computer stuff.
I am wondering if there is a software that a person can get and download to his computer so that they can download the waypoints of their GPS's down to or put waypoints from one GPS to another.  I would also like to be able to build a map off it and see where I have gone.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Ken.

I have had a fair amount of experience with the eTrex Legend.  I wish I had one when I live North of Sexsmith, Alberta.  In those days the bush was rather dense.

Garmin’s Map Source software will do what you want.  I recommend that you buy Garmin MapSource Topo Canada Software.  You can transfer maps, waypoints, and tracks with it.

Check the reviews.

This is the new version.  I do not know if it will work on your unit.

I do not believe Garmin’s Trip & Waypoint Manager shipped with the units you purchased.  The map is very general and you cannot transfer maps with this product.  It does have some road numbers such as 590, 42, and 805 as examples.

My assumption is that you are looking at getting out and back from the bush and this not for you next trip to Calgary?

You can also buy the mapping software that is installed in you Nuvi.

If I was heading for Canada with the software in my automotive gps, I would load my handhelds the Canada Topo software.  Note that I have pointed you towards an older version, it cost less, and most likely it is compatible with your older Legend and you can load 8MB of maps to it from the software.  The newer version does not list itself as being compatibly with the older Legend.  If you want the newer version I suggest you call Garmin support to insure it works with your unit.  It is not on the list.

The other catch in the system could be your computer.  What operating system does it have?

Siskiyou

Thanks for the information.
Want to use it for my oilfield work.
I have the Alberta Oil Trax software for both the nuvi's and it works great.
Worst is I do not know what all I can do with it on the program that i have on my laptop.

Running windows XP on the laptop.

Will check into the Topo Canada Software.

Thanks Ken.

I had not heard of the Alberta Oil Trax software until your post.  Clearly put together by a third party licensee.

I found this retailer in Edmonton who lists the newest version of Garmin’s Topo Canada.  Either version will work with your XP computer, assuming your computer has a DVD player for the newest version.  Notice that Amazon is now down to two copies of the old version.  There are other outlets with the old version but the price is not as good.

kodiak1:  I will send you a PM with the assumption that you have not used this feature.  We can use PM (Personnel Messages) to work with your setup.  Just use the reply to function.

Looks like you got a good deal.
