Good question, Gardner didn't have a clue when asked, it's a roll mark put on by the barrel maker, Marlin most likely.

Well Tim, I didn’t talk to Jennifer, but I did find out what the circle P stands for.

According to the unidentified source at NEF, it is found on the older barrels to indicate they have been proofed.  He said the roll stamp has been changed a couple of times and that circle P may not be on later barrels.

The .357 Mag barrel I have was fitted to my “NT” SB2 receiver/frame in early 2004 and it has the circle P.  The .223 barrel, bought new in Dec 2003 on that same “NT” receiver/frame, doesn’t have the circle P.

I guess it’s just a little bit of worthless information that could be called “trivia”, but at least there isn’t a question about what it stands for and no one will think it’s justification for +P loads!

 :?:

I had need to call NEF this afternoon before going to work...to check on the availability of some different barrels and new colors of laminated stocks...and a possible date that they will be going into production...and had the chance to speak with Gordon who is in charge of the Customer Service department..he's pretty knowledgable about our little Handi's...and since this thread was posted...I had wonderd about this circle P and also about the circle R and arrow inside the recievers...and so I asked him about both....According to him...both roll marks on all NEF barrels and receivers mean absolutly nothing they are not proof marks...and have no special meaning but is simply a part of their machining process ...and when the cutters for these are worn out...they are not replaced...which is why some NEF barrels have them...and others do not.....Now...whither this is somemore of 1 party not knowing what the other party knows ...I couldn't say...but...it is definatly different...Also...I found out...they are debating bring out a few new(old) colors of laminates...and have had limited runs of a few of them...so as what has been seen so-far...time will tell what other colors will be available. No info on when the stainless fluted 204 will start...but hopefully sometime soon...

Just thought I would pass this along to you all...

I can not say for sure but having worked in various machine shops those marks are either indicating the machine they came off of. Or the operator that was making / running the part.
Or the shift they came off of. Or the inspector of the part
I have had my own personal stamp issued to me by my employer for several years that I have to mark the parts I am making. It is a tracking system used to figure out who/when/where a part was made if there is problem. The bottom line is they mean something to somebody and if there is ever a big problem with a marked part they will use that to figure out who to raise @#$% with.

I use a of unofficial codes in the small shop I work/lead in.  We don't try to keep logs or anything, just know that a smiley, frown, flower or what not on a part means something when the thing is assembled--special stator to watch, extra good (1 of a million?), or just something to pass boredom off.  The real boss wants way too much paperwork to make these part of the regular process.

The engraved things looks like a flag that it is fit, or passed, maybe it is a signal that more work is needed to finish the fitting.  It is right along with the serial number for the frame.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Everyone seem's to be missing,,"Pardner"
I have 3 barrels and only 1 say's Pardner on it, the new guy that fitted your barrel didn't know that he does not have to put the "P" designation for Pardner on the lug.

"Hey Tom,,Umm, you don't hafta put that "P" on there." :D
"Really, I thought I was supposed too?"  ???
"Nope, Oh well, now the guy that get's this gun is gonna wonder what is stands for."  :)
