test fire this weekend, need advice
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:16:01 AM »
My plan is to buy black powder tomorrow and do a test fire.  I don't know what the local gun shops offer for black powder but what should I look for?  Irishman told me the rule of thumb is 1 grain of powder for each caliber, so 50 grains in my case.  Stupid question...how do I measure a grain?  Is there a pre-packaged charge that will work instead of measuring each time? Foil or tissue for wadding?  How firmly should it be packed?

thanks.

For .50 cal look Fg or FFg. If you have a choice, get the FG.  While you are at the powder store look for an adjustable powder measure.

This will work to get you started.

In my SAMCC .50 cal, my load is 40 grains of Fg.  It is robust!
