Should my face fear a tang sight on my 45-120?
« on: July 22, 2010, 06:53:04 PM »
As you guys know, my 45-120 gets loaded pretty stout recoil-wise.

I have procured a tang sight, and am interested in installing it.  HOWEVER, I would rather not sustain injuries.  Those of you with tang sight experience, should I be worried?

Thanks,
Tyler

Injuries no...infection yes...lightly coat said tang site in neosporin and let a curious bystander...er test subject have the first go...gauge results and make needed adjustments accordingly.   ;)

Definitely make sure that the pivot screw that holds the vertical staff is not tight, so that when the recoil of the rifle causes the sight to come back and smak you in the face it will fall forward easy enough and not break glasses, cause bleeding and make bruses. Good Luck.

FWIW...a tang sight is just WAY TO CLOSE to my eyes for the recoil I experience in my 45-120...it just AIN'T WORTH THE RISK.

Luck

I've worn a scope eye at the bench from being careless with the .45-70.  I've got another .45-70 coming in a week or so.  Since I already have one, it's gonna grow up.  I don't know to what just yet, but for sure, it ain't gettin a tang sight.  Oh yeah, the Quigley Rifle.  Forgot that bit.  Find the bad guy, adjust the sight, and blam.....splat.  And somehow his eyebrow was still hangin on his face.  I believe the Quigley in the movie was a 110....right or wrong?

I've been avoiding one personally.  I really like the barrel/receiver sight better.  Here's a post on another room where they were discussing this.  ;)

I've got a tang sight on my Sharps and I've learned to wear a billed hat or cap when I'm shooting it.  This helps in several ways.

First, it keeps the sun off of the aperture.  Your eye looks for the light.

Second, I put the edge of the bill just touching the top of the sight ladder.  This positions my eye at the same distance from the aperture for each shot.

Third, in recoil, the bill of the hat pushes the ladder down, away from my face.

Ty, I have a '90 with this sight setup:

It's brushed my eyebrow a couple of times with full-house loads. What you might do is see if you know anyone who will loan you one for a short time and secure it to the stock with electrical tape to see if it's going to be a problem.

I have a Creedmore tang sight on my 45-70 but I don't shoot the loads that you do - just moderate loads.  But I've never had the sight even touch my face.  I just make sure the butt is pulled tight to my shoulder.

Not a tang sight story but...

I have a Siamese Mauser 45/70.  I put a 2.5 power scope w/ plenty of eye relief on it.  @ the Range, Doc Bisbee asked to fire it.  I warned him to not to crowd the scope.  He did, and it did...draw blood that is,   :o clipped him over the eyebrow.  I warned him!  :(

Physics:
Gun recoils back, shoulder goes back, head follows (kind of like in the cartoons).
Tang sight is on a pivot so it goes forward, but dont crowd it, you dont have to be on top of it.
Scopes (modern) go with the gun.

From the videos Ty has posted of his shooting I'd say he'll be okay. He rolls back with the shot, I'd just avoid firing it off a bench.....
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
