Its Here! Its Here! [BC]
« on: July 13, 2010, 11:29:58 AM »

I was trying to get my wifes horses to move in for a size comparison but they wouldnt get anywhere near it! the grey is only 34" tall. but anyway it came today! the action locks up like a bank vault, trigger right out of the box breaks cleanly at 3lbs, and the front sight is far enough out that its clear in my view. [old eyes]. now the bad, the elevation locking screw is missing from the rear sight, and the wood finish is really thin.[ almost nonexistant]. but I had a spare sight in my parts box, and a few coats of oil should fix the wood. I would have had to touch it up anyway when the tang sight is installed. DR

Luckily, my muzzle loader cleaning rod made it through.  The only problem was I had to get different size components, because all I had was .50 cal.  :o

I talked to a nice gal at H&R today, Kirstan. she couldnt send just an elevation screw but sent a new rear sight. very easy to deal with. took all of two min. DR

The only factory ammo I could find for it is Hornadays leverevolution, and Rem 405gr SP. Should be like a 12ga slug. ::) DR

The Rem's are very comfortable to shoot.  The LE's are a little stiffer, but still not that bad.  If you're shooting from the bench, they will sneak up on you however..... :D

I love the Remington 405 factory load.  Nice!

well the weather was finally cool enough to shoot today! I got my sights all sorted out. I tried the rems first. shot three 3 shot groups all were undr 3" at 100yds. then shot the hornadays. 3 shots touching. shot two more groups just to see. the largest was 1 1/4". I hope I can create a cast lead load that will do as well. I would not want to shoot the hornadays all day, I was wearing a Past pad and still by tomorow my shoulder will be several colors not found in nature! I take blood thinners  so I bruise easily. the recoil was no worse than a 12ga goose load. I did drift the front sight 3/16" off center to get the rear sight centered at poi. now at 50yds it shoots POI with the rear nearly all the way down and windfage centered. All in all its inexpencive fun. Im still grinning! DR

FWIW, I prefer a pretty well centered front sight (just looks better to me) and dont mind using the windage adjustment and scale on the rear not being centered. I also have a Merit adj. iris eyepiece which is handy for the given light at the range, but truth for me is that no eyepiece (ghost ring) in the field shoots pretty well. If I had one of those 'shotgun' eyepieces to try I might like that for field.
Look at the inexpensive Lee moulds. For the price of one you can make a lot of cast bullets to try. After that you may never go back to those jacketed things.
