45LC Carbine, pitts in the bore?
« on: July 30, 2010, 12:47:50 PM »
I bought this gun two years ago, NX Sn. I have shot it at least a thousand times. I clean it after every trip. I usually run a lubed patch through it before leaving the range. I shoot cast bullets exclusively, some with gas checks. I check the bore for leading frequently. I was getting ready for a range trip and looked at the chamber and bore and thought there was some leading about 2/3 inch buy the forcing cone. Not unusual for 45LC cast. I got the kit out and cleaned her up. To my chagrin it is pitting. 3/4 to an inch up the bore from the forcing cone. The rest of the bore is clean and bright. IT is not massive but there. It almost looks like bad casting. Chamber is good. Why? Will it kill my accuracy? I have never seen this before in any of my guns. Even my muzzleloaders using black powder and not cleaning them well. I am very leery of this.

Doesnt that just ruin a day! I've made a probe from a dental pick to reach into places like that and 'feel' it out. You can close your eyes and get a pretty good sense of it. Maybe check around your area to find someone with a borescope to really look at it. Could be the roughness has caught some lead and that is making it more obvious to you, even though it has been there right along. End result is likely going to be that you wont ever be as happy with it as before you found the thing, though. Affect accuracy? How was it the last sessions you used it?
I suppose you could call H&R, and maybe send it back for them to make an assessment. Wouldnt it be sweet if they said it was a void in the metal and you got a new barrel (well, sweet if the new one will group as well).

H&R has no more 45LC barrels, so replacement isn't an option.  :'(

A bad throat on a gun you like makes for a bad day, but it might be cured with the appropriate rechamber.

I'm a crud bore fan.  I wouldn't panic til the accuracy went south and then if it did, I'd consider Tom's idea and perhaps ream it to .454 or 460.

Ok back from the range. I redid my 45 carbine, took off the scope and rails, off the surviver set up. On a topper frame and wood, open sites. Shot heavy loads, GC. Light loads PB and GC. and the NMBH. Used the same loads in both. I shot free hand, standing. Shot the guy in the head 6 out of 7 with the rifle. 25y quick shots. all in the body with the pistol.  I bench rest fired 6 rounds at 50y, very hot, about 4" with the rifle, factory sites, no bags. I guess thats ok for me. One must go within the limitations. I think that is MOA of deer. Its the sport, the hunt, and knowing the limitations. If I need to fill the freezer, the 270 will get er done.
