742s Question

A local gun shop has an old 742 in .30-06 that looks brand new.  It is a pre-pressed checkering model (the forearm just has vertical lines in it)  It has an off brand Japanese scope (Jensen I think) that has the TV screen appearence when you look through it.  The base and rings are nice.  I think I could get it for $300.00.

What's you think?

I know a lot of folks hate them.

If I have a 742,it is for trading stock. A lot of game has (and will be )killed with them;that being said,no parts are available, they are rough as a cob inside, been out of production for about 20 years.There are better choices.

I have my father's 742 in 30-06, he got when I was 9 years old.   It is very accurate and I have no issues with this 30-year old rifle.     If it i still available, I would put the $300.00 down for it.  Besides, a man can never have to many 30-06s, or 12 gauges.

I had one for 5 years and got rid of it. Jambed all the time. I loved the 30-06 in the 18 1/2" carbine barrel but the thing was more like a single shot. They had the right idea of making a carbine but it jambed. I wish they would come up with a nice carbine pump.

I ran about 50 rounds through mine day before yesterday and nary a hiccup.  I have had it for over 20 years and it has only refused to cycle l time and that was when I loaded some reduced power loads for my (at that time) young daughter and the bullet did not have ump to cycle the rifle.

I paid 250 for mine a few years ago. My uncle called it the best single shot rifle remington ever made. ;D

I have never had a problem with mine though. Take a real good look at the lugs on the bolt. If there is any wear on them I would pass, but if they are sharp and square it will probably take quite a few rounds to wear it out.
