looking for a digital camera...
« on: June 14, 2010, 01:26:26 PM »
  looking for one I can slip into a shirt pocket and get some decent hunting photos. I don't need all the "fancy-dancy" stuff, just some decent pics. A fair zoom and jiggle compensator would be nice.
  Looking at spending $100-$160.   Any suggestions from personal experience ?

There are many good cameras out there these days. I like Sony Cyber-shot cameras, I still have one that I bought my wife in 2003. It has taken a beating and still works great.  Here's one that is listed for $169.99 and marketed as pocket sized.  Buy a good case and don't worry about where your extra batteries or memory cards are. ;)

Well, all things relative, I'd probably take a good look at

www.cnet.com

and peruse the camera reviews.  You'll learn a lot, and get some pretty fair evaluations.

Thanks Dinny;
  I have looked at that one on the web and I am pleased to have your own experience as a reference point. I sure like the idea of Zeiss lenses also..

   And thank you Skarke...I'll check those sites out also....Ironglow

As a maintenance worker I'm issued a cell phone and when needed I had to go get a digital camera to document what ever was needed. seems just when I needed  the camera the battery was dead or about to die (rechargeable), or some sort of problem with the sony cammeras they had, I then went to a Noika camera phone, so far its done ok cept for inside Pic's that need a flash, all the pic's I have posted have been with the Noika phone, just something to think about.

If your going to shell out money might as well have it multi purpose, one USB cord one charger instead of two and you will most likely have it on you when a picture opertunity comes your way.
I like the idea that I can film short snippits, the police chiefs kid was filmed laying rubber through a busey inersection, nothing like uploading it to your computer, you get great response from police thata way its amazeing how cooperative everyone get's when there filmed.

  Makes even the police pay attention, doesn't it Rex !  :D

   For transferring photos here onto GBO, we need less than 12 pixels resolution, can most of these cameras be "tuned down" to fit ?

Photosizer takes care of all of those issues. ;)  To answer your question, no, I don't think they can be tuned down to take a lower megapixel picture.

  I like Sony "stuff", BUT, i don't like the way you need SONY batteries, SONY memory sticks ect... (read expensive)

  I won't buy a camera that doesn't take AA batts, or the SD memory card that seems to be the std. today.  I also want "image stabiliation", and a good close up focus...

  For me, i bought a Cannon, because it fits all of the above and more, it also takes GREAT picts...

The thing is I'd never of taken those pictures with a camera it's a hassle to carry on you & gotta to plan to take it with and is babied in its own case so by the time a picture opertunity comes by its a rush to pull from its camera case and turn it on, select the function and snap a picture by then its gone.

I carry my Nokia flip phone on my belt in a horizontal nylon velcrow close case, slip it from the holster flip open the cover and stab the camera button and Im in business.
I carry a cell phone charger in my truck, have another at the shop and one at the office.

Most the pictures in snow/ice settings were at -5F or colder.
Not many those camera batteries handle cold all that well.

  Thanks for all the tips guys. I rolled things around in my low-tech mind and decided I wanted to use AA batts. That way, I figure I could use chargeables normally, but on trips in the bush I could carry a fresh set of regular batts and be ready for anything. With compactness in mind, I stopped at Wally World, and wisely or unwisely, I asked the seemingly knowledgeable young lady which brands seemed to stand out among those she sells, keeping in mind that I wasn't planning on spending much.
   Taking all advice under advisement, I purchased a Canon "Powershot A490" for $99. Seems good so far, but for an old man, it gives me an abrupt learning curve.. :D

   Thanks again guys.....Ironglow

It's a good camera, and you'll be surprised what $99 can buy,

  Thanks Guys;
   A couple more questions;
   1) I may be a bit out of date, but the NiMH batt charger kit seems a bit pricey, must one use one that is made by Canon, or will a generic over the counter batts & charger do the job ?

   2) (perhaps for a Canon owner)..I find in my manual how to erase one photo at a time..but if I have say, 257 photos in the memory stick and have already downloaded them, how do I dump them all from memory ? I cannot find that in my manual.

Pete, see Formatting Memory Cards, should be on page 20, formatting the memory card is the fastest and easiest way to dump all of the pics.

I've done it with the PC too, both seem to work fine, but I've read that others have had problems deleting files from the camera when connected to the PC, may be camera specific, or just an internet myth, I dunno, but it always has worked for me on several digicams that I've had.  ;)

DON'T buy the Canon NiMH stuff. You can, at Wallyworld, get an Evereddy kit, with a Fast Charger (very important so you aren't waiting all day on your batteries) for less than 30 bucks, including batteries that will also work in your other stuff.

You can get the standard charger kit for about 20.

Buy at least a 2 gig card, also 20 bucks, but make sure that the speed rating is at least a 4 (don't let them sell you an old card, or you'll be waiting between shots for the camera to write)

  Skarke;
   Thanks for the tip on the Everredy kit, I'll do that. I'm afraid I got skinned already on the 2 gig chip..after a shot it says "busy". I can get a better one soon and eventually use this one as a spare.  It only cost me $11, so likely it is outdated.

ironglow,

If I had $11 for every $11 I got skinned on...., well, you get the point.  The good news is that you can probably sell it on Ebay for $10 ;)

  I really like the PowerShot 490 so far, but I have one small problem. Is there any way to lower the digi count while photographing..so I can post directly from my gallery to this forum for instance ?
  BTW: Took your advice and picked up the Eveready charger today...4 NiMH Energizer batts came with it .

Hey Ironglow, If you push the arrow keys until you see func. set, then push that, it should give you 6 size options. Then it should show on the screen. Hope that helps, Cliff

Thanks CBS,

You can also "host" the pictures on a free web hoster.  Saves bandwidth on our servers too :)

It's real simple, I figured it out and I'm pretty online photo ignorant.
