FYI, Buffalo Classic 45/70 sight swap
« on: July 25, 2010, 01:47:01 PM »
My Son just purchased a new BC/Handi 45-70 and did not like the sights that came with the piece.
We shoot CAS/SASS long range events and the rear peep Williams sight is not legal in most events.
I happened to have in my box of misc. sights and such a 1873 TD Springfield rear sight. Not a buffington type. This was the original sight with the side wings and a ladder center ramp.
We removed the WGRS H&R and installed the Trap-Door sight in it's place.
With a range check we found the front globe/sight was rather tall for the TD sight to be used in the lowered position and marked for 100 yards. In my box-O-tricks I also had a short Lyman globe sight.

We installed the lower front sight yesterday, and did a range check this Morning. The Rifle shoots true to the TD Springfield sight. 100 yd. sight setting, shoots true at 100 yds. We then did a check at 200 yd's. This was also a registered several hits using the 200 setting on the sight.

We assume this will also be the setting for all the number indications on the old sight.
The sight will be removed, a scope rail & scope installed for a temporary load development, exclusive for this piece. The load we used for Iron sight testing was for the Marlin 1895CB/45-70 we share.

Yeah, but everytime I dig into that 'box-o-tricks' Im amazed that it now represents enough dollars to have bought a pretty nice piece! At least Ive bagged and labeled most stuff in it so somebody else, someday, will know what is what or goes with what.
How many times have we bought a gun missing its original sights, etc. and wondered,"now where did that get off to?".
Check the box, son!
The box?, you mean that box of old junk we threw away?
