Would like to get "ahold" of this fellow...need advice....
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:38:13 AM »
This guy's running around my back yard.  I'm think'n he'd look kinda good in my trophy room. Took these pics from my bathhroom window one morning.  I'd rather shoot him but as you all know they don't stand still and other houses are kinda close.  I don't have any trapping equipment and was wondering if I could rig a snare....

Drdoug

Nice looking Marten you have visiting.  Snare should work just fine.  BBQ a nice chicken for supper and use the left over carcass for bait.

Marten are quite the climbers and a typical set is made with the bait placed near the top of a pole (maybe 10 ' long and as big around as your leg) and leaning against a tree, or maybe in your case a garage.   :D  Place your snare about 2/3 the way up the pole to the bait.  The marten will head up the pole to get to the bait will be intercepted by the snare.

Of course the pelts do not get prime until trapping season later in the fall.  At that time his pelt should tan up nicely for either a wall hanging or full body mount.

Thanks ST,

I don't think this is a martin....he's at least 4 feet long inc.tail and has to weigh 20lbs++  I suspect its a fisher and will certainly wait till the fall when his coat will be best.  I plan to bait, snare and shoot once with a 22lr, early in the morning when everyone is sleeping or has the windows closed.  The snare idea is great!!!  Lemme think on how to do that as there are no trees around that would work.  Maybe a ground snare????

find a choke point he goes thru , look for a trail he has made . Make sure to wear rubber gloves and boil snare to kill smell.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Seems to like the edge of the property.  Think I'll try to lure him in with food and see if I can get him to pattern.  What kind of snare wire???

You can also  just set a boxtrap and catch the fisher very easily.  If you  dont want to harvest him after looking  him or her over, though most likely a male, you can let the fisher go.   The fisher will go for just about anything, doughnuts,  bvr  or rat  meat , fruit... good luck...
