Best SA .22 mag for the money?
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:34:42 PM »
I used to own an NEF double action 22 mag but it was stolen last winter. Who makes the best single action of that caliber for the money? Ive handled the heritage and a ruger single six and liked both. What do yall think?

best is a Freedom Arms if your wallet is fat. If not a single six is tough to beat.

Best value for the dollar IMO would have to be the Ruger Single Six.   There are better guns out there but they cost a lot more money.  And there are cheaper guns out there but they are not as well made and will not hold their value like a Ruger SS.

The Ruger will last way lot longer than the H&R would have anyway. I'm still kicking myself for not buying one off a table at a gun show last fall, he was asking $200, but didnt have the .22LR cyl. and I passed.
What was I thinkin'???

I recently picked up a EAA Bounty Hunter 4 3/4" 8 shot 22lr/22Mag. It has fast become my favorite
handgun to shoot. Pretty darn accurate with either 22 Mags or 22 LR's. It feels like a full size gun
in your hand. Excellent trigger right out of the box. One of the few handguns that I have bought
with fixed sights. That's no problem with this one though. It shoots right on the money. The first time
I shot it I felt like I had been shooting it for 20 years already. It fits me like an old comfortable pair
of shoes. Made in Germany, so you know the quality is good. Less than $300 shipped.

That's a nice looking gun Bob and for under three bills sounds like a real deal.  I also see you get two extra rounds in it over the SS.

Yea, it's a real nice gun Brett! One of their 45 LC's in the same barrel length is next on my
handgun list. They have a transfer bar system similar to Ruger's.

Is that steel or light alloy framed?

The Ruger Single Six may be the best overall .22 Magnum, BUT Heritage Arms, Co. currently makes a "Rough Rider" .22 mag w/regular lr cylinder included for a very reasonable price.  Have found this pistol to be very comfortable, especially in the 'birdshead grips' variation.

I have to chime in here with a vote for the full sized Bounty Hunter in 22.  I have the six shot version and it is my favorite .22 to shoot.  If you want a more compact gun, get the Single Six and you cannot go wrong, but the one I pick up first and go shooting with, is the Bounty Hunter.  In fact now that I think about it, I have not carried my Single Six in recent memory.  I do wish I would find a 4 3/4" barrel one, mine is a 6 1/2".  But I can't complain, I picked it up used for $80!  44 Man

I'd have to go with the Ruger Single Six. They are bullet proof, usually very accurate, & will last several lifetimes.

I would say the Ruger.
It is hard to beat the customer service.
I have a Bisley and like it a lot.
If I ever find a single six for a good price i will swap the grips and hammer for the bisley to get a 22 mag Bisley.
Then send mine back into to ruger for a new bisley frame and hammer.
Really like how the bisley frame fits my hand.

I am picking up today, a 50th anniversary single six with the 4.5 inch barrel. Wanted a SS for some time now and came across this used, but unfired anniversary model for $300. It came with original anniversary case and documentation....even the orignal round fired at the factory. I couldn't help myself. Had to have it. The more I think about it, the more I think it was a great deal.

That is a great deal.  Now you will have to look for a shooter so that you can keep that 50th Anniversary model with box and papers unfired.  :o   ;)

From what I understand, you just can't go wrong with the Ruger Single Six.  But, I bought the Heritage Rough Rider, for a lot less, and am very happy with it.  It came with both the .22 lr and .22 mag cylinders, and for the money, I think it was a great deal.

crgator,

You hit the nail right on the head!  I own a Ruger Single-Six and no doubt that it is probably the best that you can buy.....but, for the QUALITY and PRICE - the Heritage Rough Rider is one of those "little known secrets"!!

Every once in awhile we stumble across something which far exceeds our expectations and rewards us with a pleasant surprise.  I personally would recommend the .22 Magnum, Birdshead in a 3" barrel to anyone and everyone and not feel that I was telling them a story.  This gun is a true value and should be allocated to your "Wish List".....
