Wow that is impressive. I just acquired my first NEF Handi Rifle in .223 and while contemplating my first Handi post/question I found this post. It looks like RECOIL just waiting to happen! :)

He's not going to tell you what he is really hunting because they are protected in all but a few small bits of bush NE of Hobart.

It is for the South-Eastern Drop-Bear (Teddius Australis).

It's either you or the bear, you never see them coming, 300lbs straight down out of the trees on your head, you are screwed if your reaction time is not good.

You have to be quick enough to hear the branches breaking, look up and shoot off-hand aiming straight up.

If you kill it you still have to get out of the way, that is only a 50-50 proposition for the best of the Australian hunters.

You may meet old drop-bear hunters, you may meet bold drop-bear hunters, but you will never meet old, bold drop-bear hunters. It is a well kept secret among us Aussies.

Brian, I never realized you were an Aussie.  Sorry for my ignorance.  You mentioned Hobart.  My kid was there several times on the USS Carl Vinson.  He loved the country and the people.  Said it was his favorite WestPac port.  He talked so much about it, I wonder sometimes if I've got a grandkid or two running there abouts ???

Pete, every so often on a thread or two I throw that fact in, so it is not from ignorance you did not know. I also have not been signing off posts with "Ooroo mate!" which would be another giveaway. Born and raised, did not come to the US till I was 27, have been here 29 years last March. There is a long history of US ships porting in Australia for R&R, goes all the way back to my great great grandfather's time after he fought in the Civil War and moved to Australia.

Whenever a US ship hits an Australian port, the single gals all come out because they know, unlike the local blokes, the sailors will at least buy them dinner and some flowers before putting the hard word on them! ;D

Brian, I've got another question.  What made you move to the States?  I've always leaned in the other direction, either Australia or New Zealand.  I'd have done it years ago if it weren't for their stupid gun laws.

My ex was a Californian teaching in Australia. Stupid gun laws doesn't even come close to describing it, NZ is way looser on their gun laws than Australia, at least you can own centerfire semi-auto rifles in NZ.

You have to keep all your guns in a cabinet or safe that is bolted to the floor or wall, and they have to be locked up even while you are at home!!!! There is no such thing as self-defence in your own house!!!! That is why home invasions is one of the most common crimes there now.

I have to make a decision in a few years of where I want to retire, and Australia is looking less likely unless I can get on to a full-time hunting gig shooting pigs or dingoes/wild dogs...

We are way off topic...sorry.

Brian, you're not off topic at all.  What we're talking about is not a local thing.  It effects millions world wide.  Check my post in Austrailia and Pacific Hunting, and you'll see where I'm coming from.  We, the English speaking knotheads of the world need to control our governments instead of them controlling us.
