BP doesnt burn instantly or explode,  its burn rate is controled by its granule size. its just not as controled as smokeless. and longer barrels do generate more velosity with BP. DR

DOT thinks BP is an explosive and it is classified that way.  Ask an old farmer what he uses to remove stumps and rocks from the ground.  BP is the explosive ingredient in the first dynamite.  If you ignite BP in an unconfined environment, say the old flash bars of cameras in the day of Matthew Brady, it still explodes.  Reducing the grain size will allow the explosion to be a tad from violent.

Swampy, Please explain why a mortar firing a given weight of projectile with a given BP charge has less range than a smoothbore cannon shooting the same, when both would be adjusted for the same angle of fire.

I think the barrel on your muzzle loader is longer than it needs to be.  I will gladly shorten it for you, no charge. ;D

The Bowswain Mates still had to repaint the decks of the battlewagons after firing the 16" main guns.

If you took a 1/4" line of bp say ten ft long and lit one end. would it all go up at once or burn quickly from one end to the other? the flash pan for old photography used a finely powdered BP.[ smallest granules]. nitro based smokeless also was used to make dynomite before they learned to make better explosives. And if BP just exploded why do they sell pistol[ fast burning] rifle [med burning], and cannon [slowest burning] powders? its usaly expressed in the number of "Fs' before the name. F, FF, FFF, etc... thats why target BP shooters screen or sift their BP to make shure its all the same size granules. [even burn rate]. just like modern powders  BP shooter have to try differant brands and grades of BP to find a proper load. DR

Wives tales or not, I have an update. ::)

I dropped off a few things to a local gunsmith's shop a week ago, one being my BC barrel. They had explicit instructions to call me with price quotes for all work requested (the apprentice was present and not the smith). I called today to see why I hadn't been contacted and they told me they cut my barrel down to 22". >:( >:( >:( At no time, EVER, did I ask for the barrel to be shortened to 22". If I wanted that, I would have bought one already that length. The gunsmith said he must have misread my writing where I wrote 27". Either way, I told him that I was very clear about getting a price quote beforehand. In the meanwhile, assisted by many of you, I decided not to have the barrel cut at all. In fact, I have a trade pending for a 22" barrel.

I think I will have another talk with the gunsmith when I return to pickup my barrel. BTW, he charged $70 to shorten and re-crown it too. I'm starting to become very aggravated with this smith already and will likely boycott him after this is all done.

I think a good summary of this can be quoted from oldsodja, "Some people's kids......" ;)

Aww, dude, that blows. 8(  I think I'd have to do a small claims court suit to get the amount it'll cost you for a new BC barrel, if he won't correct it without a hassle.  Add the cost of one through the barrel accessory program, shipping and all that stuff, plus the ($35 here anyway) court fee for small claims and make that your minimum suit amount.  I wouldn't let that one go if it were me... 8(

I hope he was , at least, apologetic! Did he even ask what he had to do to make it 'right'?
As I have said before," not everyone who hangs up a sign that says 'gunsmith' is one".
Should have seen the classic Stevens target rifle a friend had target scope blocks D/Ted for......guy put them on crooked, then used a hammer to 'try' to straighten then up when my friend pointed it out, WHILE HE WAS THERE!
