OT Henry rifles
« on: July 31, 2010, 07:10:55 PM »
I'm curious if any of you guys have Henry rifles? I know one of the major selling points of our Handi's is that they're American made and reasonably priced. The Henry's are also American made (NY) and they are pretty nice rifles. The prices are a bit higher than H&R though.
What do you guys think of 'em?

Don't own one yet.
All of the ones I have seen in stores have been butter smooth.
the ones I have shot are accurate and the butter smooth action makes them fun to shoot.
One thing I have noticed is there are none in the used racks of the shops.
I have been looking.

Owned a 22 LR Henry (Non-Golden Boy), shot it every day for 9 months of the year, never missed a beat, action as smooth as you could possibly want, wasn't very fussy if I cleaned it or not, 2-7x32 cheap scope worked well and it was deadly accurate at 75 yards. It is on my list to get one as soon as the money starts to flow again, plus the Henry 22WMR (Non-Golden Boy). Any larger caliber than that it will be Marlin for me. Good luck.

Watch out on the lightning .22's though.  Friend got one and it failed to load or jammed with std. .22 shells.  He couldn't get it to work even after lubing good, so he took it back and tried a couple more and they all did it.  8(

I too have been Henry-curious lately. Got some strong opinions, good and bad, about Henrys here:
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,212342.0.html

I did notice on the centerfires that you load by sliding out the magazine tube, which means its not a continuous shoot/reload process like side-load Marlins; probably no big deal for deer hunting, but it might be more cumbersome to defend against a stage coach robbery.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

+1 on the large capacity magazine Winchester Levergun.  I want the one Jimmy Stewart used in the movie 1873 Winchester (might be off o the title a bit).  The rifle was either belt feed or had a hidden drum, it would shoot all day.

I have a Henry lever in 22WMR...  It is smooth, and hasn't failed to fire or function properly in any way, and although i haven't had it on the bench yet, it seems pretty accurate to me.

I have thought about a Henry in .22 WMR but a .22 LR might be fun as well. From what I have read they are well made and except for the cheesy plastic front barrel band they are supposed to be fine guns. The other thing that stopped me from buying one last year was I have found them to be rather expensive....<><...:)

I've had a Henry .22 for a couple of years.  It's very smooth, looks good, and feels good in the hands.  It may be the most fun gun to shoot that I own.

I should have bought that '94 looking model when Walmart here was still selling guns, as I recall, on sale, they were about 169 (some years ago). I just kinda thought they would 'always' be around at that price. What was I thinkin'......
If I find a good looking one at a GS for reasonable I may pick it up, but it will probably have function 'issues', like most GS finds. A good cleaning might just take care of it.
A friend had wanted a Win. 9422 lever but tried some Marlins, a Henry and a Rossi(?). All went away. He kept the money at hand and when the Win. came along at the right price and condition he was able to buy it on the spot. He has been completely satisfied with no 2nd thoughts. I doubt that I will get a chance for my '1st dibbs', but I threw 'em out there anyway.
Henry is supposed to have a pretty good warrantee, arent they, if something goes amiss?

A win 73 held up to 15 rounds. An assault rifle of the front stuffing days.
Don't for get with the King's patented loading gate the mag could be topped off after each shot.
If you load a 22 LR  lever with CB shorts you can get up to 30+or - in the gun, Depending on the length of the tube.

I have 2, the 357 Mag and a 45 Colt Big Boys.  Both are the "butter smooth" types.  Fine American machines.  Expensive... yes, worth it... to me Yes.

The Henry's always had kind of a special fascination for me, but I never bought one.  They were like a grown up Red Ryder.  I've only had a few repeaters in my life.  There's the old J.C. Higgins 12 ga. pump my dad gave me when I was 14.  That was 56 years ago.  My Marlin 336 .30-30 that is also over 50 years old.  Both are in 98% condition.....and NOT for sale.  I had a Rem 521-T that was my first rifle at 11, and that was stolen years ago.  Patty and I have 4 revolvers between us and the only other is a Ruger 10/22 stainless synthetic that remains my go to bunny gun.  I doesnt complain if I drag it out in rain, snow, or sub-zero weather.  Even with my lousey shooting on running snowshoe hares, the ten round mag will accout for 5 or 6. Oops, almost forgot the Ruger M77 MKII .308.  I haven't used it for deer in years, but it is a superb rifle.  Other than the above, especially in later years, I never felt a need for the second quick shot.  That's why I'm so heavy into Handis......of course a lot of that was due to direct corruption by someone we all know and love.....not to mention names. ::)

Well, he was sorta puttering around with the 6x45, went shopping for a 6mm collet for the RCBS bullet puller to pull all those loads that wouldn't work so I can reload them with a primer that will actually work when I get em!!  ;D
