Redneck Fly Fishing
« on: May 20, 2009, 05:39:18 PM »
Anyone else fly fish with live bait? Caught 10 big bull bream and 1 2# catfish with crickets today. Just have to be gentle on the back cast. Makes for very good casting practice too.

That's not really fly fishing but I have used bait with a fly rod many times. Most of the Sacalait fisherman around here use a fly rod with bait too.

Maybe not by some definition but it involves a fly rod and fly line Also requires proper fly casting technique to prevent cricket explosion on back cast. I have fished for trout, bass, bream and strippers with a fly rod and proper flies and I believe using crickets improve my control and presentation.

;) While not traditional fly fishing, using bait on the fly rod is fun, and I think many old timers did it quite often. That is how I learned to fish. Today, with the shotgun only mentality for turkey, the catch and release for  trout that is forced on us by the media, old skills are forgotten. I have caught bass, bluegills, trout, catfish, and carp in my fly rods using bait. The soft action of my old rods made some of these fish seem huge. The old carp gave me real respect for this power house of a fish. If you like it and its legal, do it. Enjoy. ;D :D ;)

a 4 or 5 weight rod with about a 2'' helgrammite hanging on the end of the line, will make the smallest smallmouth feel like it weighs 3 or 4lbs. Freakin loads of fun!

use grasshopper nymphs for sunfish.

Doesn't take more than 1 or 2 back casts to get it over the beds so its not too tough.

A friend of mine I used to go to church with tried fly fishing for bass for about a year. when it wasn't as productive as he want it to be he put the rod up until a co-worker asked him about it and he sold it to him. The guy that bought the fly rod took and put a open face spinning reel on it instead of the fly reel. they said he could cast a mile with it.

An old friend of my fathers always uses a flyrod and minnows for trout.

I always enjoyed taking a deer in the fall and clipping the tail to tie some home made flies and to catch bass with them in the spring. Now thats recycling. :D
Thank God for the woods and the critters that inhabit them

Bait on a fly pole.
Isaac Walton did it, so it's good enough for me.  ;)

;) This week I used bait on my 8 foot Fenwick to take a limit of brown trout for the pan. When I am catching fish for the pan and do not plan to release those I catch, bait is the way to go.  ;D  Also caught some nice rainbows early in July on bait. The first fish of the season, and my girl friend is a great cook.  They were the tastiest trout I have ever eaten. ;D :D ;) :)

I have a small spin reel on an old fly rod that  I like to use for small jigs.  Very nice for panfish.
