Presentation case issues
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:46:34 AM »
When looking over the collection I was buying from this week several of the Presentation cases had the flocking missing from the inside. This is common but a couple of the guns had small pieces of the material adhered to the left side of the gun. these did not look like rust, but are not easy to remove. I ended up buying an un-fired 29 with this issue because the price was right. Has anyone dealt with this and do you know if it can be cleaned up? Hammerdown, I am especially anxious to hear what you have to say about it. shotgunner

Hello
I have done probably 150 of them in the past.  ;)  Re-flocking these cases is not always easy and if you are not familiar with the process of it, they can be destroyed easily..Put simply, I have a tried and true method and would be willing to help you out here, but it may cost you some cases in a barter agreement...  ;)  Here is a Case I Modified for my Pre-27. It was stripped off it's flocking and I had to cut it down from a 4" case to a 3-1/2" case as the barrel on my pre-27 would not fit the 4" Factory case. P.M. me with just what you have for inventory and we can go from there.. I am off to do a job right now, but I will answer your P.M. Late today....Don't worry, I have you covered on this project...Hammerdown

Hammerdown. I am sorry I was not real clear in my question. I do not need to know how to re-flock the case. My problem is that there is material adhered to the gun, and I do not know how to remove it without damaging the finish. Shotgunner

Hello
The problem was that Moisture  be it Humidity or Gun Oil, allowed the adhesive Glue used to hold the flocking of the original cases to come off. Therfore, to get it off  a gun I would use a wet sponge held on the guns finish for awhile then follow up with some 0000 steel wool. That will take it right off then the gun can be oiled if it is Blued or Flitzed if it is Nickel to bring back it's original beauty....

I will pass the information on. One of my skeet shooters came over today and bought both the 4" and 6" 29s. He took the gun out in the sunshine and looked it over. I think that the material will come off, but I am pretty sure the finish will be less then perfect. I have one 4" 29, unfired, remaining. I intend to keep it, but will shoot it if I do. Perhaps I should look for a one that has been shot already. Shotgunner

The early cases were covered with a velvet like cloth.  The later ones were foam covered with a blue fake cloth finish.  The later ones foam, would often crumble and stick to the gun.  I don't ever recall damage to the guns from this foam.  The foam boxes begin to look bad whn they crumble and turn white. I have some of the old black leather cases with the orginal .44 Mags.  I keep them sealed in air tight wrappers.

Brake-kleen, chemtool or laquer thinner. one of these will cut anything. Careful, this stuff will attack plastic or wood.

HAMMERDOWN; I have two N frames I have extra cylinders for. Can they
be included in the box? These cylinders have the ejector rods so they must be laid flat.

Thanks, P.A.

Hello P.A.

I would Not suggest using any Solvents on these old Presentation case inserts as it can and will destroy them. The only safe way I have found to get the failed flocking material off them is to soak them in warm water for awhile so it lifts off. Once they have sat awhile in the water use a bristle scrub brush to take it off until they are clean. There are two type of materials used in the Presentation case molds being styrofoam and hard molded plastic, of which chemicals will destroy. They are not intended to hold anything other than the gun, cleaning rod, cleaning brush and screw driver, so an extra cylinder will not work out lying in one. Below is a case I had bought for my Pre-27 Nickel revolver that came to me as a 4" Case. I had to cut it down to make it fit my 3-1/2" revolver barrel and then reflock it. I reinforced the rear with a special bonding adhesive of the same nature that fiberglass resin has. It isn't pretty but very strong and does not show anyways.... Hammerdown

I meant the solvents for the gun , not the case.

And thanks hammerdown.
