My .500 Shorty Scout....I am in love!
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:25:13 AM »
Finally got this thing done with the help of my dad. Here are the specifics.  Barrel cut and crowned to 16.5"  Drilled and tapped for scout base.  Custom barrel band/sling swivel stud silver soldered on barrel.  Pallet wood stock cut to youth dimensions and topped with a limbsaver pad.  Forend bobbed 2.5".  Stock and forend painted with black brownell's spray grit.  All metal sprayed with #6 parker duracoat.  Leupold M8 2.5x scout scope in Warne low rings.  OAL is 30.25" and weight is 6lbs 4oz. Now for the good stuff!  Went to the range today to get this little beast hitting what I was aiming at.  Was looking only for minute-of-deer accuracy but boy was I surprised when my 1st group measured a half inch at 100 yds!  So I shot another and another and another!  All in all I shot six 3-shot groups...my largest group was .655" and my smallest .189"!  Average group size was .332".  You can imagine the grin on my face getting bigger and bigger as this went on even through the pain ;D.  The load was 30.1 grains Lil Gun under Ranger Ricks 610gr cast T-rex thumpers averaging 1425 fps on the chrony.  I absolutely cannot believe how good the rifle shoots.  This is some of the best shooting I've ever done in my life...with a $250 rifle!  I planned on developing a load but I guess I just hit the Magic combo right off the bat.  I dont want to change a thing...heck I dont even wanna take the forend off.  So after all the grouping was done, I thought I'd try the 300 yard gong which is an 18"x18" piece of 1/2" plate.  After a few ranging shots to get my elevation correction right, I rang it four times in a row.  Needless to say I could not be any happier with this little set up.  This just made my handi fever that much worse :P  Much thanks goes to my dad on this one.  Here in Louisiana I can use this rig during primative weapons season, but I may be using it ALL season with these results.  Whitetails and hogs beware!

I have a similar set up in 357 Herrett, scout scope and all.  I am sure that little rifle of yours is a handful for sure.

Congrats Jason, you'll have to try Rick's 700gr too, they run 1430fps in mine with a case full of Lil'gun, not as accurate as yours tho, that's some great shooting in a much lighter platform, mine is in laminated Ultra furniture, even in the Leadsled with no weight, it hammers me!  :D

Great shootin.  My 500 shorty is in synthetic stocks now.  It is light as feather - which means it punches hard - on both ends!  ;D ;D

Thanks yall...the good shootin was probly just a fluke on my part.  What amazes me is that this rifle is even capable of this kind of precision.  It will literally drive tacks...or should i say railroad spikes!  I also shot some 440gr cast performance over a hot, but not max, load of H110.  The best i could get out of it was around 2.5".

Beats the livin stuffins out of me at the bench.  Much easier on the shoulder off-hand.  I am man enough to admit that I am not man enough to shoot mine without an extra slip-on recoil pad.  The last thing I want to do is develop a flinch based on the anticipated pain.  BTW, the more moderate loads of Lil Gun work well in mine too, although I do get pretty good results with 4227 and cast bullets - again, pretty moderate loads.

Awesome little rig, and even better groups.... some of the best shooting tightest groups I have ever heard of in the 500 Mag. Great scope too for the application.
Enjoy that little beast.

Thanks.  I had big plans to try several bullet/powder combos but looks like I nailed it on my first try.  Think I will exclusively shoot the ranger rick since the do exactly what I want...kill critters under 100 yards.  Not to mention superbly accurate.  I had to send him an email yesterday to let him know how pleased I was with his bullets.

That is one fine looking Handi you got there...I really really wanna do that to my Handi now.  It just looks so...killer.  Pardon the pun :P

I just got an order of Ranger Ricks bullets, and I've always heard wonderful things about them and their quality.  This just adds to all that I've heard.  Can't way to shoot them!!

Just looking at the bullets he sent compared to others I have received, the quality is obvious, everything is uniform and perfect.

Jason045,

Great shooting! This will hammer anything you'll hunt. I was not surprised by the accuracy of your rifle. It's been my experience that Handis are very accurate when you find a load it likes (like any other rifle). For me in my 500 S&W Handi it is the Federal factory load using the 275 gr Barnes XPB. It consistently shoots into one-ragged hole at 100 yards (that is when I don't forget to degrease the shelf latch so the barrel doesn't pop open). It is easy to shoot and devastating on deer. I'm going to try to duplicate the Federal ammo's performance by reloading.

Once again, great shooting and load development. Let us know how it works this coming deer season. BTW I also live in LA (SE LA) but I hunt in MS, so the Handi in 500 S&W is also legal in that state.

I grew up in sorta southeast LA...maybe more east central...Vidalia, right across the bridge from Natchez.  Now live in Jonesboro which is in north central but still visit my mom there often.  Plus 7-8 trips every fall down to Death Valley.  Geaux Tigers!  Anyway last I was down there I heard that there was a .35 caliber minimum in primative season in Mississipi now.  Also heard they might be bringing that to LA in next year or two.  That would be great cause my 9 year old could hunt with his maxi then.  I am thinking this big 610 grain slug is gonna cut a flip anything I hit with it!

I can't remember exactly what the primitive weapons regs in LA & MS are, since the H&R 500 S&W (and a few other calibers) have been legal in MS for a few years now and more recently in LA. So, that's what I've been using in MS. IIRC the MS Primitive Weapons Regs also state that the rifle has to have a visible hammer. My BIL hunts in LA near St. Francisville and he's been using the Handi in 45-70 during Primitive Weapons Season. I certainly hope that LSU does well this year in football, though if you believe the "experts", they are in for a tough year. We'll see soon.

Very nice set up you got there.  ;D

I'm going to get one like that but set it up in .357 Maximum to cut down on recoil.

Be sure to post pix of the first boar you bust with it.
