Which Bullet for 45lc or 454 Casull
« on: August 08, 2010, 12:01:50 PM »
Which jacketed bullet has been the most accurate and successful for you hunting deer sized game?  Here's some examples:
1. Hornady 250 gr xtp
2. Hornady 225 gr flex tip (leverrevolution)
3. Hornady 185 Gr xtp
4. Remington Golden Saber 230 gr HP
5. Sierra Sports Master 240-300 gr

And of course any others that you have had good success with.  Barnes bullets look great, just a little to spendy for me.  Just trying to get a feel for what may shoot good in a 45lc soon to be 454 C.

300 XTP Magnum and 250 XTP I'm hoping to try the flextips soon.  They performed great in my .45-70

I don't like any "spendy" Bullets, I am old and cheap. I have several 45cal molds. The bullet i have found that shoots the best is a Lee Mold, 300g GCFN, Loaded hot. I have used 25g W296 under this bullet and got 1450fps and a 6" group at 100y. That is sorta a 454C load out of a Classic carbine. It hurt me. I have loaded light, PB & GC loads and only the heavy loads worked well. My standard load is this bullet over 20g
W296. I have loaded 300g jacketed SN bullets and the results were the same. Way too "spendy". I costs me 5 bucks worth of lead and 5 bucks worth of GC to load about 100 rounds. I don't count the powder cause I use it for a lot of things. The only Spendy bullets I use are for my 41 mag, which only kills things. Way out there.

My 45LC Handi likes the 335gr and 360gr Cast Performance bullets. But......it shoots the Barnes 225gr XPB best. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I really like the XTP's and FTX's.  I plan on working up a load using the FTX in my new 45Colt BC.

Just to say about the 225gr FTX and the 250gr XTP, both are designed for 45lc loads, and start shedding their jacket at around 1500 FPS according to hornady.   I had some 250gr XTP's that I was loading for my 460, traveling at modest velocities.  Jackets weren't holding up at all.  Fouled the bore up pretty bad after one shot.

The 225 FTX's I've never loaded hot, but I can tell comparing them to the 200gr FTX's that they have a thinner jacket than their 200gr counter parts.

If you're looking for something that will work for both I'd try either the 200gr FTX or the 240gr XTP Magnum.   Both of their jackets are much thicker and designed to hold together under the higher pressures/velocities.

As for the others I can't comment.

The Hornady 240 and 300 gr XTP Mag's are made for 454 Casull speeds.  If yer gonna push em fast, they will stand up for ya and cheaper than many of the other jacketed bullets that are tough enough.  I picked up a couple of boxes of the 250gr FTX's for the 450 Bushmaster to push faster but haven't tryed em yet.    DP

Another bullet to use in the Casull/460 is the Hornady 250gr SST muzzleloader bullet, it's used in smokeless muzzleloaders to 2600fps with good terminal performance, I've shot it in the Colt carbine at 1925fps, but never hunted with it, it does 2500-2600fps in the 460, but accuracy was ~3" at 100yds with Lil'gun, haven't shot it since.
