Last minute hunting tips or suggestions?
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:53:51 AM »
At the end of next month I'll be bear hunting again and I'll have two buddies with me.  We're all experienced hunters and have all the guns, camo, and bug spray that we'll need but I always like to make sure I'm not forgetting anything before I go.

I'm planning on buying some liquid smoke sauce and I was thinking of getting a couple little sponges and tacking them to the trees and soaking them every time I get to the stand.  I was thinking it might help the scent get out and around rather than just spraying it on the ground.

Another idea I had was possibly leaving some bits and pieces of beef jerky out there because they have a good scent that sticks around for a while also.

Now keep in mind that I'm sure the guides probably aren't doing either right now and I don't want to mess things up, but I didn't think the smell of food would hurt anything.

I picked up some refills for my thermacell.  I got one pack of the regular ones, and one pack of the earth scented refills.  I'm not really sure which one is my best best.  The regular one don't have much of a scent if any, and I've never used an earth scented one, but I don't like the idea of an unfamiliar non-food scent.  What kind of bug spray do you all use when bear hunting?

Should I take my trail cameras?  I have a couple trail cameras that I use for deer hunting and I've never taken them bear hunting to try and catch them after hours, and wasn't sure what people thought about that.  Do trail cameras scare bears off?

I would love to take cameras with me. I have seen reports of them getting chewed up by curious bears, I wouldn't handle them with anything that would transfer bait scent to them for sure.

Try and determine what type of bait is being used before you leave, and maybe have a bit of an alternative available. Say they are using sweets maybe a good meaty grease to make that bait stand out. I would be collecting bacon grease to kill two birds with one stone, smoke and meat. might try a small burn with a couple cans as stove and pot. I've used a cut out bigger can to hold a sterno and a tuna can as the pot to boil grease or honey. You get more smell from less volume that way.

Something I intend to use is crisco blended with strawberry Jello, using a stick to smear it into tree bark.  A sweet berry scent, won't wash off or run, and takes time and effort at the bait to eat it up. My guide uses meat scraps primarily, with about a half cup of Sberry donut filling as a topping.  Another favorite of mine is to mix vanilla and corn syrup with a bit of water into a spray bottle and I'll spray about 4oz. into the surrounding weeds and leaves, to get lots of scent into the air, I think the syrup sticks it better. I will also spray a few puddles onto rocks, or the top of the barrel.

I like a damned comfortable folding chair in the blind, less figgiting for me anyway. I find a headnet very useful in the skeeter dept. What drives me crazy is the in the ears up my nose crap. The skeeter has to land to realize I taste bad, by that time I'm crazy. The thermocell has been a godsend and I rarely mess with repellant, Bens, if I am going to use any and I just get the little dropper bottle.

Do you just use the normal thermacell refills and not the earth scented ones then?

If baiting is legal soak the sponges in bacon grease. Liquid smoke smells like smoke and I figure only Smokey the Bear would come to it.

Take your camera, I got this with mine.  Larry

Yes I use the insecticide type, I don't know if the earth scent is only a cover or has the bug dope included. If skeeters are a problem you will find out very fast.

Any repellent with a high concentration of DEET will work well.  Bug head nets get to be a pain after a while.  I know of Canadian guides who spray a little bug spray around the baits so the bear get used to the smell.  Unscented Deep Woods OFF is as good as any.

Years ago I bought a bug net that fits like a hooded sweatshirt without the opening for the face.  It's the best bug net product I've ever seen, but it covers the eyes too.  That's not so much of a big deal, until it's getting to those last few minutes of daylight and and looking through the scope.  I'm going to get a new bug net just because of that.

I'm not concerned about the thermacell not working with the earthy stuff, I'm more worried about the scent being too strong.  I always take an arsenal of bug spray with me just because.

It may depend on where you hunt but on unpressured bears they couldn't care less what they smell with respect to humans.  In fact they come to associate the smell of humans with food.  On my trip last spring 8 hunters saw more than 100 bears and I'd bet 95 of those bears knew we were there.  One guy shot a bear walking into the stand.  Another had a bear that refused to leave while they tracked a bear that had already been stuck.  These aren't just the small bears either.  A 19" bear was killed after it climbed the tree the hunter was in...  The smell of the thermacell (which is a necessity) was never an issue.  I've never tried the dirt smelling ones.

You think this bear couldn't smell me?  Eventually he walked around the back of the tree and acted like he was going to climb up.

My decidedly unexpert advice?  Don't shoot the first bear you see, and if you're in a good spot you may want to pass the first several bears you see until you get better at judging.

teddy12b , I don't uses any bud spray. I have a good bug suit I wear. Last year we had a guy in camp and he put the bug spray on and the bear always scented him. We hunt from the ground, trees are for the ladies..lol. Being up close and personal, you need to take every advantage. If you are in a remote area where the bear hardly ever see people, that is a little different. Some of them bear don't care about your scent or even you, they will come in to check you out. But the bear that live where the people do, they don't like any strange smells.

I use my thermacell for deer hunting, I leave it at home when I go bear hunting, and just rely on my bug suit. I use a Bug Tamer II

Teddy12b,

I hope you have a safe trip and smack a big one!  I would have to second what Redhawk is saying.....As for bringing your own bait, I would hope the outfitter has told you what you should and shouldn't do.  I find that when you add something new to a bait site, then it gives the bear a reason to stop and think, your smell alone will be a change, but like I said I would check with you outfitter.  As stated the therma cells work great, but they do smell, if you are hunting in an area where little human activity is around then you sould be ok.  I like the bug nets, and yes they are a pain to see through when it gets dark.  Big ber or bug bites..............Any how I'm sure you will hae a good time, post lots of pic.............

Speaking of pictures.  I just made what could possibly be the nerdiest purchase of my life.  I saw there's a new pair of sunglasses out there that have a video camera built into the frame.  The only problem is that they were $150 and I wasn't going to pay that for a new gizmo so I got on ebay and found a pair for $22 shipped.  I don't have high expectations, but I think it could be fun to play around with these.  I'd love for this new gizmo to work out, but who knows.

I bought a bendable tripod called a gorillapod before I left.  It worked great.  Since you know where the bears are going to be it's not too hard to aim the camera and then just hit record when something good comes in.

If it wasn't a shooter then I could take either the still or the video camera and put it on my monopod.  Shooting pictures and video passes a lot of time on the stand.

I even got some video of the infamous beaver stealing bear.

I have a mount that screws into the tree and can hold a video camera also.  The problem with all my cameras is that they are noisy and make a lof of beeps.
