Presuming you're leaning toward a boltgun (you didn't say), you might want to check out a Ruger 77/22 Mag Sporter.

I bought mine, used, in 99% condition (no box) for $350 about a year ago on a vacation to FL.

I've read good things about the Zastava rimfires (made in Serbia and marketed by various, including Remington). I have not seen one.

I know how annoying it is when someone has a fixed idea and keeps pushing it. But, there is only one rimfire for me: CZ. They can be found for as low as $350. They are a very fine quality rimfire.

I think Marlin still makes a full sized bolt action in those calibers in the $200 range.  I own several CZ's, and am satisfied with the quality and accuracy of both.  My CZ 452 .22 shoots to within a hairs breath of what my Kimber will do at less then half the price.
