I lucked out
« on: August 17, 2010, 12:07:40 PM »
I got a call from the local gun shop I deal with.  He wanted to know if I had a ram rod for a sidekick 24 inch barrel.  he took one in and it did not have a ramrod.  I did have one, so I went over after work.  Anyway he had a 24 inch sidekick blued wooden stock.  It has the williams sites and 5/8 plug. Anyway I got ot yacking as he wanted to buy the ram rod. I told him about ugrades etc.  Bottom line, I brought the gun home for 60 bucks and put my ram rod in it.  It needs an upgrade or two which I will leave out the details. I will order them tomorrow and then of to the range after. I also got him to throw in a pack of orange carriers for 5 bucks as no one had purchased them in a whiile. I can at least shoot it before the upgrades, since mine are 7/8 plugs.  I will keep you posted.

well I cleaned it up put the scope base on and removed the sites, put an oring on the barrel lug and when checking closer, it is a 7/8 breech plug when I finaly got it out.  Sweet we will be at the range tomorrow evening after work.  My buddy offered me 125 for it tonight before I did anything to it.  I said umm nope.  I will need to order an upgrade ignition device so I have one for all of them. Funny, now I have three original 7/8 plugs and no orange carriers.  I should just get rid of them.  Ther ewas a small amt of rust in the barrel, but it cleaned right up bore is clean and shiny.  wood is as good as any and I happened to have an original ram rod for it for now.

How do you tell if you have a 7/8s plug?  NEF still sells the carriers if you want some.

Congrats Bubba.

That would be a first year (2004) Sidekick, with the 24" barrel, 7/8" breech plug, and Williams Sights. I have one in SS. Should have a real good barrel on it. Orange primer carriers, who needs 'em? ;)

Enjoy that rifle!

Bubba,

Congrats on the new MZ, you did real well on that deal!  "Ignition System Upgrade", I like that.  I am very happy with my 7/8" upgrade and the cutout on the barrel for the orange 209 thingy allows me to use the T/C THunderhawk 209 primer feed tool to cap my huntsman.

ok I wen and tried it out.  I had a cheap simmons 3x9x40 scope on it.  When I got to the range, the scope power ring was locked in t 3 and will not turn.  Anyway I tried it at 25 yards. I put two in an inch box approx 4 inches to the right.  I adusted the scope and did the same in the bullseye lower left corner.  I was shooting one of my favorite loads 90 grains fo 777 fffg and the 250 grain round nose lead bullets in a crush rib sabot and 777 primers in an alternative ignition sytem. In every H&R I have owned, this load has been awesome.  Anyway I will get a new scope and get it sighted in and see how the whitetail deer like it.  The bores still seems to have a sight rust problem. but it appears to be getting better with use.  I guess not everyoe is as meticulous as they should be. It does not seem to effect accuracy and the more I oil the bore, the better it will get.  Bottom line, for the price I am happy and I know I could make money on it very easily if I chose to, but I dont chose to lol.

Bubba,

Glad your new frontstuffer is working out for you.  Do you hunt deer with the 250 grain LRNs or just use them for plinking?

bb That is my hunting load as well as plinker.  They do the job very well.  I have not tried then over 100 yards hunting, but I would not shoot a muzzleloader at game any further than that with any bullet powder combo.  Just my personal preference.
