Whew, this is my lucky day!!!
« on: October 14, 2010, 03:40:32 PM »
Getting all ready for deer season which opens Saturday, got my 38-55 Handi all ready with a neoprene butt stock cartridge holder, decided to check the trigger since I did the trigger job to see if it's holding it's weight, tried to pull the hammer back and it wouldn't, stopped about ½" back and wouldn't cock!!  :o :-X Uh oh, gotta be a broken transfer bar, tore it apart and the striker part fell out with the trigger guard!  :-\ Sure glad I did that today instead of at the moment of truth while hunting!! I think I'd better run right down and buy some lottery tickets, gotta be my lucky day!!  ;D It worked fine at the range last week, had no problems, it must have broke on the last shot, fortunately I have a couple extras, got it replace and checked the trigger, still averages 3lbs-4oz.  :)

I have lots of Handis, but I only carry one at time when hunting, I don't carry a backup in my fanny pack!!  ;D

Good save Quick!  That would have been disheartening to have that happen when lined up on a big un'! ???

I found an old Topper 148 the other day with the old style hammer and no transfer.  I've been eyeballing the 357 maxi and wondering........

mechanic, don't wonder....DO IT!!  You'll love it.  Cut it back to 16.5 or 18 inches and you'll love it more.

Tim, thank the Lord for the blessing he bestowed upon you. Also that you have the ability to repair the firearm yourself. The fact that you checked and rechecked was in your favor. Had this happened while the crosshairs were on that giant that you will never get another oppertunity at another shot. Good Luck. Lou

Good thing you caught it Tim ! Two years ago I went to the woods with my Marlin 30/30, having disassembled and cleaned it. Imagine my chagrin, when of all times I was talking to a game warden acquaintance when he stopped by..and I couldn't eject the shell from the chamner. Unknowingly, I had lost the ejector from the receiver.
Ordered a new ejector and I finished the season with my H&R..planned to anyway..

I love your choice of Handi for hunting this year, it's always good to double check before the season starts. I usually try to fire a fouling shot the day before opening day.

Thanks guys, I shot my fouling shot the last time I went to the range, so it's all ready, it won't get cleaned again until I put it away after the season, or it gets wet.

Good hunting to everyone!!  ;)

Best of luck Tim, as you head out into the woods in search of Mr. Buck Blacktail. Looks to be a mostly sunny day ahead for Saturday on your side of the Mighty Columbia.

Was it luck or just something the oldtimers just automatically know to do? Check and recheck. Like storing muzzle end down. Therfore not caught off gaurd.
thanks Don.

Well, I can't say I've specifically checked it before a hunt in the past.....but it sure as heck wouldn't hurt to do it from now on......if I can remember to, anyway!! ::) Of course it can always break after I check it, maybe a better thing to do is check for floppy strikers to catch it before it falls off! I can't say it's real common, but happens enough from the reports here that it's always in the back of my mind.  :-\

Well, I didn't get one, but Jack did, a little spike fell to his .270 Browning. I saw one but just a glimpse, no shot, we'll be back out tomorrow, one down, five to go!!  ;)

Tim, so far your luck beats mine.  An 11 point came out about 220 yds. downhill from me, and meandered around for quite a while.  He finally presented a broadside of his front half.  I took my time and took the shot.  He just looked toward me and trotted away.

I was almost in shock and wondering if my scope got whacked or what.  As I walked down the bullet's line I noticed a spot in a small oak about ten feet up and about a hundred yards from my stand.  It was a nice fresh bullet hole that blew out the back of the tree.

How did I fail to see that tree in my scope?  Beats me.  I took the rifle to the range and fired it, and all I can say is the faults all mine.  The rifle is perfect, and should have been about dead on at that range.

I'll do better next time......... ???

Mechanic;
I recall a beautiful, big buck which approached from a stand of pines, into the meadow providing me with a great side shot..but he lingered behind an apple tree sapling. I observed for a while, waiting for him to move. Soon he started chucking his front feet..getting ready to turn & bolt. So I figured, "it's now or never" and I let go with a 12 ga slug from my H&R.
The buck did exactly what he had in mind..only even faster...
Going to the sapling to check for marks, I discovered a limb cut nearly through..and another one 3 ft past..grazed by the slug..about a foot to the right..

Now, this buck looked like a big 12 pointer...but I didn't get a chance for "ground shrink" to set in... :D ;D

A week later, I was hunting the same spot with a buddy, and pointing at the healthy apple sapling, I said, "there's the 100 pointer I shot last week..and I shot a couple of it's points off"..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Geez Ben, that's too bad, stuff happens tho, ya know.  ;) No deer today, we saw 5, no shots on all but one, I pushed one to Jack on the morning hunt, he was just about to fill his doe tag when the bambi following her stepped into view in his scope, so he held fire and let her raise her baby, at least until it's old enough to be on its own.  ;) Maybe Wednesday!!  ;D

Thanks guys,

Tim

I went back out this evening, Tim with the granddaughter in the stand with me, and we bagged a couple nice does.  I did the shooting, as I am not sure yet of her ability, but she helped field dress them.  She wanted to know what every "innard" was.  Not squeamish at all....

Now I've got meat, I'll buck hunt in a couple weeks when the rut kicks in..

Hope you fill your tags Wed... ;D
